? about MINI

I am a very new noobie. I hear talk like R50 and R56. What would be mine and how do I tell what the others are. I have a 2005 Chili red white top non S model. Thanks for the schooling for those helping me with the lingo.

A non-S, like you have is a R50. A Cooper S (supercharged) is a R53. The 07-08s are all R56 regardless of it having the turbo or not.

We answer all questions!!

Enjoy!!!!

2002-2006 Non S model = R50
2002-2006 Cabrio = R52
2002-2006 S model = R53
2007 - on R56

Hope this helps

That isn't quite accurate... for the Cabrio:

2002-2008 Cabrio = R52

The current convertible is still a 1st Gen model - nothing of any real substance changed on the Cabrio between 2006 & 2007 (or 2008, for that matter).

Also:

2007+ hatch = R56
2008+ Clubman = R55
2009+ Cabrio = R57

My 2 cents ... to help confuse you.

The 02 to 06 MINIs had a R50 and a R53
The R50 is the Cooper and the R53 is the Cooper S

please note that while it is convienent that S and Supercharger start with the same letter it does NOT historically refer to Supercharger.

the original Minis (note CAP & lower case spelling) did have a S model, they were not supercharged rather a Sport model.

The R designation is a BMW thing where different models have different "names". The R50 and R53 were looked at as 2 different models.
Many differences, even engine internals.

On the new MINIs the S is a historic comment ... refering to SPORT (yes it is Supercharged)

The 07 & 08 are both called R56, because BMW views this as one model, with an intake difference ... TURBO ...but it is accepted to call it a R56 Cooper or a R56 Cooper S, as the case may be.
Fewer differences and more focused on Intake differences.

Further evidence of this name designation is the different R series as listed above for Cabrios and Clubman models (always keeping the S if it is the Sport model)

Lexo350 ... you are CR/W ...but that is for another thread
