Got a new 2007 Cooper S and the parking light on the gear shifter wont turn off....

I was just wondering if anyone had a clue to why this is happening. I tried to look in the the Owners manual but it said nothing. Help!!!

Have a 2007 non-S with auto-trans and the "P" light stays on a really long time along with starter button but eventually goes off. Never really timed.
