PANAMA PRACTICE

Looks like Tasco will be in the dark till she arrives at Panama. Good way of killing time is to watch the cams at the canal while using AISfree maps, and get an idea how long it takes to trek from the Gatun Lock to the Centennial Bridge, then bridge to Pedro Miquel, then to the last lock Miraflores.

Been learning and watching the camera's on the locks going through the Panama Canal. A while back one of the members here captured a picture of his ship going through the one of the locks and in that picture was a nice large bird (hawk of some type) Well, I have been watching the http://www.pancanal.com/eng/photo/camera-java.html Miraflores lock and that bird is back - seems that is in "his' area and like to hang out there - take a look - anyone have any idea what type of bird this is??? from the looks of his feet/tangs? He has to be a "Bird of Prey"

I have been watching the locks this morning also and noticed the bird and wondered what kind it is. I'm guessing some type of Eagle.

By the way, I was on the Port Hueneme site and our Tasco is still scheduled to dock on 10/8 despite the delay in leaving Southampton. We'll see though...

At the cost of the RO/RO ships, canal passage fees, port fees, and a few other costs, and also time slots for the canal and berths at ports, delays of schedules can be expensive. WW seems to have a 'buffer' added to the west coast route, so even leaving 1-2 days late out of SH they still arrive on schedule at PH. Now I'm not saying it can't/won't happen, just that it does not occur that often.

Just some hints for tracking Tasco thru the locks, in the distance of the pic above you can see the Cenetnnial bridge. Once you know when Tasco will be to the bridge, use the Cenetennial bridge cam, once she is out of that cam view it will take 10 - 15 minutes before she arrives in line for the Perdo Miguel lock. (the lock in the pic before the bridge) Depending on lock traffic it can take as long as hour to pass from PG lock to the Miraflores, and they do change cam view angles during the day, so at times you will not see the same view as in the pic above.

So it looks like the wait is only a few days till she is at the Panama Canal. I'll start watching for her on the 28th. Thanks for the link to the pic's. Very cool. Patience is a virtue (yea, right!)

After months of seeing that bird so much I did some searching on google. It seems the general opinion has it as an orange-breasted falcon.

Canal Passage

Since we do not know what time Tasco is scheduled to arrive in port, she could show back up on AIS any time from afternoon on 9/28 onwards.
The link below is for the AIS maps of the canal area.

Panama Canal

The next port for Tasco is the Manzanillo International Terminal (MIT) located in Colon Panama. Usually WW ships are at the dock from a few hours to as long as
10-12, there is no way of knowing the exact time she will leave the port. The MIT site has info and under the "Media" tab there is a photo gallery with pics of
the dock area for the RO/RO ships.

MIT

Once leaving the port she will trek back out past the breakwaters to the Cristobal Anchorage area and anchor there for the night. Usually the WW
ships have an early morning passage slot for the locks, so she shouldbeheading in for the Gatun Lock between 5 - 8 am (PST)
So if you want to see her make the canal trek and catch some cam pics in the locks, it takes a bit of time to keep checking the maps and stay updated to her movments.
All of the times, dates and such are just my "best" guess from watching previous WW ships, so take that into account.

This is sad that we have to occupy our time talking about a bird all because our ship is in the dark! :impatient Where do you think she is? I know, I know, she'll be in Panama this weekend.

If you want to kill sometime you can use a google map and make an estimate of where she is. Just use a speed of 16 knots, then estimate the hours left before arriving at Panama, doing this you will most likely plot her location within a few hundred miles. I would but I'm trying to learn if the Spyder is acutally going to arrive this week.

Agreed. I think we'll see her show up on the Panama AIS site soon (I hope).

*peeks in*

Soooooo, I saw the planets moving into alignment last night and figured there must be an RO/RO nearing the Panama Canal and entry to the Pacific.

Congrats y'all. Hang in there. It won't be long now.
