Greetings, and seriously considering a MINI

Hello!

Where to start... I'm an engineer in Austin, TX, and I've been hankering for a new Mini Cooper S as of late. Found this board through Google (what can't be found on there?!) and it looks like a fun place.

Currently driving a 2002 Subaru WRX, but slowly wanting something different, but still fun, so have been looking at the 2007 Minis.

First questions first, though, should I bite the bullet on an 07? Or let any teething issues with the new body blow through and wait for an 08?

Welcome.
I bought my 02 Mini used knowing that it was the first model year and I could have the same types of issues that you're referring to as an 07 might have.
However, since in my case it's a second car I was willing to take the risk.
It seems to have paid off, I haven't had any major issues and it's a blast to drive. No regrets.

Welcome to NAM!! Have fun roaming around here...lots to learn and see, and lots of cool MINI-crazed folks to meet!!!

'07 or '08? Well there haven't been too many over-arching issues...a problem here and there, but that's what the excellent MINI warranty is for. All in all it's been a pretty smooth transition so if you want an '07...why not? In any case, the '08s will not be substantially changed.

Thanks for the welcome. If I bought one, I'd probably get it up in Dallas (closest dealership is in San Antonio, but, well, I wouldn't wish the pain of SA on anyone :p ) since I have some family up there.

One concern I have had was reliability, as my family has traditionally not had much luck in German-designed cars (yes, these are made in UK, so that may be different). I would be coming from a car that had never been in the shop for warranty work (2 small recalls, and when I broke the car on my own doing) in almost 6 years. Taking the car in to a dealership would be a trip on its own.

The build-your-own on Miniusa.com is way too fun, and I'm not getting any work done...
