I haven't felt the steel ones, but let me tell you the 2-ball I have is silky smooth, and it fits in your hand better than the stock one. ( I am not being dirty! Just the facts, ma'am.) They're not quite as heavy as the steel, but they're heavier than stock, so there's a small difference in "feel" there as well
No knock against the engraved ones, but the ceramic smoothness and absence of any grooves are part of what I love about it.
Go for it! It's worth it.

My ***** are shorter when installed on a BMW; usually around 1 1/8" shorter than stock.
Unfortunately, they sit a bit higher than a stock MINI ****; somewhere around 1/2".
Originally, I made these things to fit only BMW's. Later, I adapted them for MINI; hence, the confusion. Sorry!
My steel ***** weigh 18 ounces. Pool ball *****, about 9 1/2" ounces.
I understand that MINI has lightened the shift ***** by replacing some of the metal with plastic, but the one I have on my desk weighs 6 1/2 ounces.

The stock **** sits about as low as any aftermarket **** that you'll find.
My attachment mechanism is the reason for the increased height; and unfortunately, it can't be modified to lower the ****.
The good news is that I can engrave practically anything you want.
A Zorro "Z" is very simple.
Here's one I did a couple weeks ago for a girl in Australia.

I bought one of the excellent custom "MITM 2006" ***** at MITM, and I have to say that before I read this thread I did not even notice it was higher! I've had no problem finding the stick when I needed it.
For those on the fence, consider that the thing you spend the most time touching in your MINI (next to the steering wheel) is your shift ****! After you get one your right hand is telling you you have a new car. It's awesome!
To me engraved is about as nice as smooth - only the top is engraved so you still feel the awesome smoothness of the sides.
Also I had the problem where the stock **** would come off with vigorous shifting sometimes. The Whalen **** has a much nicer locking mechanism, both for staying in place and taking off later if you decide you want several different Whalen ***** to choose between.
