Travel Plans

The wife and I are planing on leaving home ( about 15 miles South of Rockford IL) on the 9th at about 8:00 am taking rt 39 south to rt 88 west
to rt 80 at Moline IL then west. Looks like we may stay over night in or around North Platte Nebraska and get to Copper Mt. about noon on Thur.
This will all be new to us we just bought our Mini in June 06. Looking
foward to meeting lots of new friends. :impatient

Sandie, sorry for not responding sooner to your post. Looks like our Utah group is basically non-responsive. We had a great turnout at Vegas, but I might be going solo from our Utah club. Now, I need to determine if I'll be heading out to Pueblo for some track time, which would mean I would have to leave Wed instead of Thurs. But, that all depends on my work. If I don't go, I'll bring my bike for a day of riding, and I'll try to match up my schedule with as many people as possible coming from both Nor/So Cal and Vegas. Also, if you AZ boys are planning on coming through Grand Junction, let me know.

Just a thought

When we travel we always take our FRS radios they work great between
vehicles. We use them on our motorcycles or two cars up to a couple of
miles away. If others have them we could chose a channel to run and be able
to talk between each other while on the road.

FRS radios are a go

and also a prize at MITM! So if you don't have some, you can WIN some!

We use the international MINI channel 7 sub 21 out here, but at the resort you may wish to put your spouse on a private channel if you like.

Good suggestion....

I think attendance is being hurt by Monteray and MTTS being the following weekend.

MattMan, I'm not worried, if I have to drive all the way by myself so be it. I'm still going. IF you are able to meet up great, if not don't worry about it. Thanks for trying. Hope to meet you there.

That could well be

The reality is that there is never a good time, we had to make a decision late last year on our timing, and we had to compromise a few things in terms of timing. Next year will be the same. This year, we wanted a weekend earlier but Copper was booked with a bike race. We did not feel right putting MINIs and bikers on the roads together. In addition, the Denver Grand Prix and the International Golf Tournament here surround our event. There is no way to avoid this type of conflict.

We are proud to have 125 or more registrants, and what will determine the size that the event grows to is the fun factor that this year's attendees achieve. We are doing everything we can to drive that.

Next year? No Monterry 2 weeks later, no MTTS, but still the local conflicts. We had to get this in before school went back in session.

Hey, we feel that 125 or more is a great number, considering that the first year at the Dragon was less than a few dozen. The AMVIV events I have attended (all 3 ) have a peculiar draw (Vegas) which is magnetic in and of itself. Copper Mountain Resort is not magnetic but....we feel very family friendly and conducive to family vacations before and after MITM. Besides, there is nothing threatening about Colorado.

Finally, we have some things that nobody else does - all mountain roads less one Interstate. And Mt Evans at 14,264 ft, paved, at midnight, nekkid...under the Perseid Meteor Shower, well - - that speaks for itself.

See you soon. You will have a blast.

Make that the WESTERN DRAGON....WESTERN DRAGON

Yes, and here is how to find it:
 • From Denver, head West on I-70 up the hill
 • Exit at Evergreen, headed West on Evergreen Parkway CO74
 • Just past Bergen Park, turn right (at the light) on CO103 (Squaw Pass Rd)
 • Head West on CO103 Squaw Pass (the WESTERN DRAGON) for 31 miles to the entrance of Mt. Evans. Go up if you dare ($10 per vehicle, 3 day ticket) or head down 103 (Chicago Canyon Rd) 15 miles towards Idaho Springs
 • At Idaho Springs, have lunch at the TKB TommyKnocker Brewery (we recommend the WINGS) or head west on I-70 towards Copper Mtn Resort (45 miles). (To find the TKB, go cross I-70, turn right on Miner St., go 1 block. You are there).
Let us know what you are doing. The MITM HOTLINE number is 303-807-9483.

We are traveling on the 9th. I know there are some other individuals coming from St. Louis and beyond on I-70. I also want to do the western dragon on the way in. What time are you looking to be in Salina? I was figuring on being there somewhere around 10-12 depending on when we leave. It is about 3 hours from our house. It is about 8-9 hours left to get to CMR from there.

10:00 works for me. I need to get a radio. Woot had them on Tuesday and I did not check early enough.

We are just over 200 miles from Salina. However with the wife and kids it takes us a bit longer sometimes.

The people coming from St. Louis if they are in Wentzville at 4:00 they can make Salina by 10:00.

Leaving early morning on the 9th from Yreka, CA taking 89 to 44 and then 36 which become 395 into Nevada then on to I-80 all the way to Salt Lake, will continue on the next day to Colorado hopefuly will meet up with anyone leaving from there othewise just following the directions I printed from Map Quest I- 80 to I -215 to 6 which should become I-70 . Only plan on stopping in Salt Lake for the night. It's going to be about 11 hours the first day and around 7 the next.

Glad to know the route

You may wish to consider I-80, westbound from SLC thru Wyoming. Very, very scenic. Then, drop down on WY789, to CO13 to Craig, to US40 which gets you to Steamboat, then follow 40 to Kremmling, the CO9 to Dillon, then right turn on I-70 to Copper.

Yes, this will be slower but much more scenic, depending on your timing.

Otherwise, SLC to I-15 to I-70 thru Grand Junction is not bad. You will enjoy Glenwood Canyon (E of Glenwood Springs, on some of our rides).

Either way, you may wish to post in the Rocky Mtn Forum of NAM, there are some MINIUTAH folks coming this way...it is possible to hook up.

Sadly, I have no MINI; but my wife, son and I are leaving from Freeport at roughly the same time, in our MINI(VAN).
Driving straight through to Denver, though.

If we take enough potty breaks, and you drive fast enough, maybe we'll see you along the way.

It all depends on traffic in the St. Louis area. That is why I posted 4:00 at Wentzville. I live south of I-70 by 30 minutes. I can get to Wentzville in a car in about 2:30 from I-470/ I-70 interchange (about 200 miles). However it can take 2 hours to get thru St. Louis. It is about 50 miles more to the arch and about 15 to Kansas. Add about :15 for morning rush hour in Kansas City as this is when you would be going thru. Then another 175 miles to Salina that will be without slowdowns.

I look at it this way.
Salina to downtown KC 2:15
KC to Blue Springs :30
Blue Springs to Wentzville 2:30
gas/ bathroom stop :15
5:30 travel time with agressive driving +?? Wentzville to your house.

I can possibly meet up with you where the KS toll booth is located.

That works also. I made South Bend, IN to home in 7 hours. About 600 miles. Flying low.

Alternative to Interstates from Albuq/Santa Fe, NM...

Suggestion to avoid Interstate highways:
Take Highway 285 from Albuq to Santa Fe, Espanola, Antonito (Colorado) and Alamosa, heading toward Buena Vista. Then get off of 285 (goes more toward Denver) and head into Buena Vista and Leadville on US-24. From Leadville, head north on Colorado 91 toward Copper Mountain Resort. After about 12 miles, Copper is on the left, right before you reach I-70. As an alternative from Leadville, you could also turn north on US-24 toward Minturn and Vail. At I-70, turn right (east) toward Vail. On I-70 thru Vail and over Vail Pass. At the bottom of the pass, Copper Mountain Resort is on the right at Exit 195. This happens to be MITM Ride #1.

Here's a Google map from Albuq to Leadville. Copper is only 12 miles north of Leadville on CO-91 (US-24 thru Leadville turns into CO-91 when you head north, out of Leadville). Here's a Google Map.

Here are the GPS coordinates from Google Earth:
39 deg 29 min 56.82 sec North
106 deg 08 min 29.28 sec West

I just did a 3am practice run to Atlanta to see some old friends, and it wasn't that bad. Actually I made some crazy time too. So I don't think I will have an issue trying to meet you guys at 10am. I'll try damn hard. =)

If anyone is interested, we are driving up from Dallas on Wednesday and staying in Florence (outside Pueblo) then driving up the mountain roads to Copper early Thursday. I think some Houston peeps will already be there, but if there is anyone in the area, we'll be headed from Dallas through Wichita Falls-Raton NM- Pueblo CO Wed.
