Central locking

A couple of days ago our 2006 cooper s developed a fault where we had to press the remote lock/unlock on the keyfob about a dozen times before we could lock or unlock the car, we tried the spare fob aswell but both did not seem to be received by the car no matter how close we stood.

I don't know if this would have any effect on it, but the mini had been unlocked & sat in the garage for a week or so & we were using the other car, so when we came to used the mini we drove it out of the garage, used it for the day parked it back on our drive but it would only lock after after pressing the lock button a dozen times or more.

But today everything is fine again just a quick press of the lock/unlock button and its spot on even from 10 to 15 mtrs away
Any idea why this would happen ?
