SES light staying on with P0171 code

Hi everybody,

I've been reading up on all the threads I can find about trouble code P0171 and all of the info I've been seeing is saying that most of the lights are on intermittently and not always on.

Mine on the other hand has been on since my last oil change and possibly even further back.

I have recently installed in my 2005 R53, an Alta CAI, MSD Coil Pack, new spark plugs and Magnecor wires. But keep in mind this light was on long before any of that was installed.

Thanks for your future insight!
Cam

Any chance it's popping on when you are going up hill in a high gear at a low rpm?

Nope, consistently on from the moment I turn the car on to the time I shut it off. Has never shut off since it came on no matter how many drive cycles I may have been through.

It won't go off by itself, it needs to be cleared by the code reader. If I remember correctly it is a code for a small vacuum leak. I had never seen it before I had my car serviced at at the dealer and they did a software update. At the time the car was completely stock. I can clear it and it stays away until I go up a hill under medium throttle in a high gear. I've checked everything many times with no luck, it now is off most of the time now, but can get it anytime I want by going up hills. I'm guessing that the software upgrade changed some parameter to something more sensitive. I have a scanguage installed and clear it anytime it pops up. I've never had any performance or milage issues, just annoying.

Going to have to get it shut off ASAP then to see if it is the hills that is setting it off. I've also heard that it could be something as minor as a gas cap or oil cap that isn't sealing right. Any validity to that?
