A can of SeaFoam in the tank once in a wihile, 8 ounces in the PVC intake to burn off the valve and piston carbon, and 8 ounces in the oil crankcase just before an oil change is also good maintenance.
You won't believe the white smoke if you've never run it through the PVC tube before....

I have a 2002 R53 and a 2008 R56. They both have their good points.. The 53 has way more "Pep" and it's a hooligan rough-houser, so it's slightly uncomfortable on long run's.. The 56 is a way more sophisticated ride, while retaining "Pep" in sport mode, very nice, light transmission… great for commuting… albeit problematic, with little annoyances.. The quart of oil thing "every" 750 miles is a pain (I actually got to read the BMW dealership notification regarding this)..but what are you gonna do? It's a Gen 2!!
If i had to choose which one to keep? It would be the R53 hands down… It's a lot easier to work on, It's way more fun to drive!!
Get The 2006… It has all the good stuff from the 2001/02 Mini, Plus it has the quality ride… I'd get stiffer shocks though.. ")
