1961 Austin Countryman

This wagon is the rarest of all mini wagons being a Mark I with internal tank and smooth roof. Even though the title reads as a 1962 the car was built in July of 1961 according to British Motor Heritage. This car was an original USA import to California and in the early years the state of California would title import vehicles based on the year they sold, this one sold in April of 1962 hence the date on the title.

This car has under gone a complete bare shell restoration lasting 9 years. No expense has been spared to make this the nicest woodie wagon in the states and maybe the world. The wagon was never a rust bucket and spent most all of its life in southern California before moving to Minnesota 20 years ago. No panels or metal were replaced on this car during restoration, except for the custom work of the rear license and firewall, it was never a rust bucket. The wagon was red from new and the paint work is a 10 out of 10.

INTERIOR

custom grey leather seats and panels, rear seat is stock and fronts are from an early model BMW. NOS rokee dash with cooper S speedo, heater and fan assembly have been removed for asthetics. All new rubber and gaskets on all doors and windows, all hardware was removed and rechromed before install. New Newton Commerical carpet imported from the UK. All the doors, panels, firewall and floors were lined with DYNAMAT prior to assembly.
EXTERIOR

As stated earlier the paint is immaculate in a base coat clear coat. Brand new wood kit imported from the UK and properly installed. The front and rear door hinges were rechromed and polished before install. New chrome bumpers. Mamba 10” wheels where completely refurbished and Yokohama A008 tires are almost new. Rear license was custom “frenched” in to door from stock postion below bumper.


BRAKES AND SUSPENSION

Four pot Cooper S discs on the fronts and KAD rear discs as well. Fully adjsutable GAZ shocks on all four corners as well as S Racer Hi-Los, red coil springs and fully adjustable front control arms. The hydraulics are a Wilwood brake and clutch unit with full adjustment.


DRIVELINE
(the best part)


Engine was purchased from and built by Specialists Components in the UK, it has the BMW 16 valve head on a 1350 cc motor running BMW fuel injection and puts out 140 hp. It is attached to a MiniSpeed 5 speed gearbox with a 3.41 final ratio overdrive. Custom stainless header with an RC40 exhaust system. Alloy radiator with tropical blade fan, does not run hot. The car is very quick and will cruise all day long at 80 plus mph. The detailing of the engine bay in the pictures speakes for itself.

As I stated earlier no expense was spared with this build. It was intended to make the ultimate sleeper woodie.
