Power steering (oil) filter?
Hi all,
There is one shop around my area said, if you were changing the power steering pump, it will be good if you change the power steering (oil) filter as well.
As far as I read from NAM, there is no filter involved in changing the pump and also the realoem.com doesn't list out the filter part
- Is there really a filter in the power steering component? What is the part number?
- Is it necessary to change it?
- If I where DIY change the pump, is it ok to drain the oil thru the hose? As I dont have any vacuum to suck it out from out
Thank you very much

Dont know first gen Mini (second gen being electric), but...
with Audi's that use the same hydraulic fluid based PS set up, I disconnect both lines at the reservoir--the supply and the return. I stick the supply line in a can of fresh fluid and the return line down to an oil drain pan (or an empty soda or milk bottle up higher if I can't route the line cleanly to a drain pan). Then I just pump it through with fresh fluid by starting the motor. I have someone at the ready on the key to start and stop motor in case can runs low or anything goes awry w/ draining. Run time is brief to pump it through--well under a minute. Similar concept to how full flushes can be done on auto trannies, where the supply and return lines are opened up for the tranny cooler.
