Read more about Star Spec:
http://www.motortrend.com/features/newswire/91/34980/

Quote:
The new tire features the "Star Spec" tread compound, which helps a performance car's initial dry grip during sanctioned amateur driving events, such as autocross and high-performance track-events hosted by regional car clubs.
"'Star Spec' means impressive dry grip out of the gate. Driving enthusiasts won't have to wait for their tires to 'come in' at the beginning of an event, helping to provide an edge over the field. This is also great news for owners of smaller vehicles, who sometimes struggle to work their tires up to the point of peak grip," Neidert said.

Some good MINI sizes (all in stock- thank you Dunlop)-
195/55-15 $90 each
205/50-16 $107 each
205/55-16 $108 each
215/45-17 $125 each

How are these different from the Direzza DZ1?

M3NTAL Mar 27, 2008 05:59 PM

They ARE the Sport Z1. I have them in 215/40/17. they are quite wide

Tire sizes available are different.

Then also Direzza Sport Z1
http://www.tirerack.com/images/tires...t_z1_ci2_l.jpg
This is special priced at tirerack.com and on closeout replaced by the Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec. Not many sizes left in stock now. 200 treadwear. Some of the tire weights may be heavier than the Star Spec version- complete new tire weights not available yet.

The Direzza Sport Z1 features a unique high-grip tread compound molded into a directional design featuring notched, continuous shoulder ribs, large intermediate shoulder blocks and a wide center rib to deliver consistent contact with the road and enhance grip during cornering. Two wide, circumferential center grooves, wavy shoulder grooves and multiple lateral grooves provide water evacuation to enhance wet traction. The tire's internal structure includes two wide steel belts reinforced by a spirally wound JointLess Band (JLB) Technology polyamide to provide strength, uniform ride quality and high-speed capability while steel cord reinforced, 2-ply polyester sidewalls help resist lateral deflection to provide responsive handling and cornering stability.

--------------
This all sounds similar and the tread pattern is close.
The Star Spec tread compound might be the biggest difference.
In any event you cannot buy the older version much longer.

Whoohoo..they arrived at the door yesterday and man I gotta say they are WIDE for 215/45-17 and quite low profile!! I think a 215/40-17 in these tires would be a harsh ride.

Sitting next to a stack of 4 Avon Tech R's in 225/45-17...they are only about 1/2" shorter!

Tread looks mean too!

Cant wait to get them mounted!

kenchan Apr 2, 2008 01:29 PM

those are good looking tires.

oxtox Apr 13, 2008 06:58 AM

review please!!

the platform Apr 13, 2008 09:07 PM

I've been looking at Direzza's for next tire,+1 for review.
I'd like to hear how your sidewalls feel (45 vs 40's)
I'm running Kumhos on my SSR's 215/40/17
I'd like to take up a little space in my well with the 45's.
-good looking tires.Review please:)

MiniJayhawk Apr 14, 2008 07:18 AM

I ordered a set of the 215/45/17 over the weekend. Can't wait! Can the Original Poster please post pics?!?!?

zinvestor Apr 14, 2008 08:28 AM

I ordered mine today, being installed Wed. I had a post over on another thread and CPAYNE responded:

I am so looking forward to the Dragon on these in 15 more days:nod:

cpayne Apr 14, 2008 06:12 PM

Ok ok..sorry slackin here.

I got them installed on Saturday...and they are AWESOME. This granted, coming from 195 winter studded tires and previous runflats. But holy crap. With my Koni Yellow Sport and TSW springs and WMS XRSB, H-Sport Camber Plates and Rear control arms, this is a magical combination for road friendly set-up. I mean they are quiet..they are not harsh...the turn in is just nearly instant and really hold going off the line. Not to mention the 200 wear rating and relatively "cheap" price

Go for it..you wont be disappointed!

Any impressions on wet grip and hyroplaning yet?

MiniJayhawk Apr 16, 2008 06:25 PM

They had exellent wet grip reviews on TireRack compared to other top tires.

zinvestor Apr 17, 2008 11:18 AM

Got mine on yesterday. Initial impression is the same as CPayne. The grip is awesome on curves & corners:thumbsup:, car feels like its on rails, but it is soooo much smoother and quieter  than the Dunlop 9000 RFs I had before. Need some rain to check wet grip and hydroplane resistance and am now just 12 days from heading for the Dragon.

Yes..it snowed on Wed on the way home! 32 degrees but was 80 degrees the day before (Colorado Weather) and wasnt sticking on the streets. They were quite good even in cold temps like that and very wet roads.

\Nothing scary or unpredictable

SilverRocket Apr 18, 2008 03:53 PM

Cool, pretty sure I'll be going with a set of these in 205/50/16 when my new MINI gets here.

Thanks.

iceckid Apr 18, 2008 04:30 PM
