Mini R53: "Mk I" Mini Cooper S 2001 - 2008
Description:

Long block motor from 2003 Mini Cooper S with approximately 140,000 miles on it when pulled. It will likely require a crank kit as one of the crank bearings wore away. No visible damage to the crank or block. The replacement head has approximately 20,000 miles on it.

History of the motor: The motor was regularly serviced - at approximately 120,000 miles, the block to water pump hose failed causing the motor to overheat and the head to crack, as well as the water and oil to mix. At that time, the head was replaced and fluids were changed and an extra oil change was completed after a few hundred miles, with no signs of contamination. At approximately 140,000 miles the engine developed a serious knock, and upon break down, it was discovered that the bearings on rod 1 had disintegrated. The motor was replaced at that time. Since removal, block has been stored in garage.

So, I assume the crankshaft is a toast then. As well as the #1 rod.

I’d be concerned where the bearing material went too. Perhaps into the cam bearings.

The crankshaft has no visible damage to it. I would have expected wear or grooves, however none was noted, same with the rod. Anyone interested in rebuilding it would definitely want to complete a thorough inspection.
