So I ordered this center console tray for a 2005/2006 R50/R53 to give my a place to put my phone in my 2004 Cooper. I just can't figure out how to get it in.
The instructions from Outmotoring are:
Install: first remove the existing 4x5 vented plastic panel held in place with a single Torx screw under the toggle panel. Once that panel is removed fold the new main part of the center console in half along the crease that is molded in. Push it in from the front- under the toggle panel while holding the flap down and rotating it sideways. Push it in and twist as it shifts past the 2 posts on either side of the opening. It will naturally want to unfold and pop into place once in position. Clip the panel into the same location that the removable panel was attached and insert the screw to fasten it in place.
I was able to get the old panel out fine, I just can't get the new one in. What is the trick?
Well I have waved the white flag for today and reinstalled the old panel. Instructions say you can get it in in under 10 minutes without major disassembly but it looks like I am going to have to pull the center console and pillars. I also mangled the back of it pretty bad trying to figure out how to get it to fit though I think it will be fine once I figure out how to get it in.
Tried some more and this just isn't going to work. I emailed back and forth with the guys at Outmotoring and I just can't get it installed based on their instructions. The panel is looking pretty tatty at this point. Leason learned: If you want to do dash mods, spend the time to take the dash apart no matter what the instructions say. I also need to figure out why the wires behind that panel are all greasy. My fingers look like I have been doing engine work.
The configuration of the 05/06 ('facelift' cars) is slightly different than the first gen cars - that piece doesn't fit. You want the OEM storage tray package. I have a set if you're interested. PM me.

While that was the factory option this part from the facelifted cars is a known fit once you get it into position. My issue is just that the way Outmotoring suggests you get it into position isn't great.
That is what I have now figured out. When I am doing my driving light install (I got hood brackets in the same order) and have the dash partially apart to mount the switch I will pull one of the pillars (I don't think I need to pull both).
