HELP! AC Gone after Alternator / Battery Replacement
Have a 2012 Countryman with 150000 miles. Alternator and battery replaced last week at my dealer ($2000). One week later AC stopped blowing cold air only warm now. Dealer said the compressor died and a new drier is needed....price is 2500. I read today that the ac compressor has to be removed for alternator install. I feel a twinge of distrust and not sure if I should. Is this a coincidence and a stroke of bad luck or a screw up. Did not get it fixed yet. They suggested I speak to a salesperson (wish they hadn’t said that)

I think $2,000 for a battery & alternator is insanely expensive! I would run from that dealer and try another MINI dealer even if farther away to get a second opinion.
As as far as whether bad luck or bad service is concerned for the ac compressor quitting, it’s hard to say but if it’s a coincidence it sure smells like something else doesn’t it? Removal of the ac compressor to get at replacing the alternator shouldn’t require contaminating the ac refrigerant “unless” it was incorrectly opened up by removing the lines (speaking from general knowledge). Have someone experienced take a look, and good luck!

Maybe you could quiz the dealer tech where you had the work done before heading off in another direction. Just be calm and ask him/her how they came to the conclusion the compressor "died"??? Did it work for awhile after you got the car back or hadn't you tried using the a/c until you noticed it was only blowing warm air? You paid for the work that was done, and if the a/c was working when you brought the car in for "other service" (it was working right?) you deserve to know why the compressor "died" when the car was in their possession. Any reasonable person would agree that you deserve an answer.

Ask them to document the process they did and the time frame. Could be they didn't follow the proper methods.

Ac was working the day I had it towed to them for the alternator and battery replacement and worked up until 7 days later. I asked if the AC issue had anything to do with the work they did the week before and of course I got a flat out “NO”! If they didn’t say I should buy a new or preowned car, I probably wouldn’t be so angry and distrustful. I was just hoping to keep it a little longer, it’s been a pretty reliable car. I’ll have to decide what to do Thank you for your input
