Pilot super sports or no?
Well spring will be here before I knew own it and Imake going to have to figure out what tire I'm going to get. The car is a daily driver that I'd like to track a few times this year. I hear everyone talk about the pilot super sports and itm curious if they are worth it or is there somthing better out there?

Assuming 205/45/17 tires, it's pretty hard to find a better daily driver summer tire
than the Michelin PSS. If cost is a big priority, the Conti DW is a reasonable compromise. If absolute performance is a big priority, then the Direzza ZII Star Spec or even the Bridgestone RE-71R (will wear even faster than the ZII) could be your best bet. |
There's always something "better" depending on your perspective, desire and wallet. But to answer the title question, do it. There's a reason more than half of us on the forum have a set. For the price, which is reasonable, they are a damned good tire. 95% of people can't drive well enough to notice a difference between PSS and anything "better"
|
If you need tires now, definitely. If you can wait a year, wait for the PS4S to come out and you could probably scoop up some PSSs for cheap.
|
Well I can wait a few more months and that's it, only because I only have winter tires. The all seasons that were on it were bad when I put winter tires on. I was thinking about the ps4s but wasn't sure when they come out.
|
I mean price isn't really a issue, but it's always nice to save money. It's just a daily that I like to drive hard and like to track a few times and see how it/I do.
|
Keep an eye out for a used set on here or ebay, you see 'em with more than enough tread for a couple seasons fairly regularly when guys sell theirs or get new tires. In fact, I have a set on factory wheels with TPMS I could sell... this literally just occurred to me, lol
|
Discount Tire will have a rebate within the next few months - at least Memorial Day, if not sooner. Their prices are competitive already (they also price match) but usually have $100 rebate on a set of 4 Pilot Super Sports.
|
I'll have to keep an eye out for that.
|
I'm another fan of PSS. Last year I had another set of wheels that had the Conti DW, and I noticed the difference in 'normal' daily driving. When I'm ready, I'll spend the extra $$ on the PSS for my car.

How is the road noise with the pss
|
I never had any noise issues. If you look at a picture, there is only one block of tread (on the outside edge), then just grooves. Not many places for noise to come from. I also had good wear when running -2.0 camber all around.
Have fun, Mike |
Im currently on my second set of pilot super sports within the last 20,000 miles. I drive my car rather hard and have got to say that I am very impressed with the amount of grip. However I found that at least for me that they wear fairly quickly and am currently looking to switch them out with the Yokohama S - Drives which I've heard mixed reviews. Just giving you my two sense! I guess it depends if you want something sporty or something that will last you awhile.

I'm down to the tread marks on my PSS tires in around 20K miles, and I drive normal... for a MINI...

You have to be driving stupid hard to be destroying tires that have a 30k mile treadwear rating in less than 20k. Just my two cents.

The answer to the question PSS is always a resounding "yes". The tire that Michelin designed for the Ferrari 458 should do for most of us. I wasn't even a huge PS2 fan, but the PSS changed the game for multi-purpose street tires, IMHO.
Definitely see if you can take advantage of rebates/discounts on the PSS as it phases out! |
I love the PSSs on my R56S. They just won't break loose even in an abrupt turn. Not for cold temperatures though, if your temps get to 36* then these get harder and less gummy. I've got about 25-28,000 on mine now and they are beginning to aquaplane if I hit a puddle at high speed. Getting close to replacement time. But I must admit, it's fun to feel the jiggle and to correct for it when I hit the water (no other cars around, of course).
|
There are definitely stickier tires, and ones that are a bit better in the wet, etc. But nothing does it all as well as the PSS. Based on testing the PS4S is better in every way, too!
|
When it comes to the pss there are different subtypes. What do you guys run?
|
I've hear great things on the firehawk Indy 500 tires. Looking into those right now.

Check out the Conti ExtremeContact Sport, the successor to the DW. Supposedly stacks up decently well against the PSS and slightly cheaper.
|
I ran PSS on my e39 M5, they were amazing awesome tires. It was the only tire I had on that car that could put down the power in 2nd gear on a dry day.
I have yet to experience a tire that had better performance in the rain too than the PSS. I plan on putting PSS on the Mini once it needs new tires. |
They are popular with bigger cars because they come in eleventy billion sizes including some big sizes
I would never run them on the track myself, I would go with something like a hankook rs3 or the new rs4 if I was doing double duty. That new conti extremecontact sport looks like it handles track use better without the horrible chunking that street tires tend to do on the track |
