Need help turbo died
 

Hi I have tried the search feature and I can't find the help I need. I have the 1/2 power light and the car drives like a turd 2009 r56.

Took it in the the mechanic after I re-installed the DOS CIA that had come loose hoping it was an air leak that I could not see turns out I need a new turbo.

He tells me there is a TSB that the dealer should have done but did not and that I should take it to mini and have them fix the turbo on there dime? Any ideas warranty is expired anyone think that they will cover the replacement? My mechanic is someone I trust and he said its a $3400.00 job.

If the dealer will not fix it on their dime is it something an average garage mechanic can do?

How could a turbo replacement possibly cost $3,400? I'd DIY or find a new mechanic.

You can find a low mileage turbo or even a JCW for $500 and a new FrankenTurbo for $1000. If a mechanic has a powerful high torque impact wrench, it should be about $400-$550 in labor. The turbo and manifold can be removed and replaced with out putting the car into Service Mode (removing the entire front clip)
You should also replace the turbo oil lines, and gaskets.

Well that's why I'm here asking questions instead of writing the mechanic a $3400 check

I don't have his estimate in front of me but the turbo itself was $1770.00 Itself

I have a good impact wrench, and found a used turbo for 400.00 is this a job I can do myself? ( I'm an average home mechanic)

We have the regular turbo here 11657600890 ( Cooper S version ). Make sure you get the right gasket. Currently around ~ 792.00 . There is the other hardware if you need it. Turbo is up front on the R56 so its not too hard to reach.

Did the aftermarket intake come loose and suck something in ? What TSB ? Turbo Oil lines ? Turbo oil line heat shield.

Good lord. If that didn't include labor then, yes, figure out an alternative. I'm afraid we can't help with a turbo right now. We're out of stock and still in "testing" mode.

I think the TSB was for the heat shield because it's not on the car. The intake came loose but not off, I don't think it sucked up anything only driven 1/4 mile after I heard the change in the sound it makes. The mechanic said that there was too much play inside the turbo and it was not building any boost.

And make sure you get new oil lines if you go with the stock unit. Its a good thing to replace while you have it off.

Yes that is what he was talking about. I have an appointment at the dealer tomorrow, guess I will find out what mini is willing to do...

If they are not willing to fix it I'm going to try and do it myself.

If you happen to find DIY instructions, please okay. I'm in the same boat and we are considering DIY, also.

It's not an impossible job to replace the turbo. In order to get the turbo off you need to remove the exhaust manifold from the engine. The bolts on the turbo face the manifold so it is most difficult to get to the nuts to remove the turbo.

When I did mine, I ordered new mounting studs, nuts, gaskets, etc. I figured it was just better safe than sorry.

Good luck with the dealer, but I would be flat out shocked if they covered any of the turbo. Maybe they will cover the turbo oil line heat shield because of the TSB.

Lastly, do you know the condition of the used turbo. Low miles, etc. They can fail for various reasons so it may not be a good deal just because it is cheap. Check out http://www.jmturbocoopers.com/. They have rebuilds and aftermarkets at great prices. You can also send yours to them for a rebuild pretty cheap and they warrant their work.

If you replace the oil feed lines get the kit from Detroit Tuned theirs will not fail.

My clubbie had 50,090 miles when turbo froze up. Yup 90 miles out of warranty. Dealer did the oil line and turbo for $1,800. A little above Ways price but that was when I lived in Mini hell. Yes Mississippi, with zero dealers had to drive to Birmingham. It was also when I saw them changing a clutch on a countryman. That makes a turbo change look like trimming a hang nail compared to open heart surgery.

I am definitely going with the Franke turbo or a K03/04 hybrid when my turbo dies!

I have the same light and was informed it could be a turbo related problem. My car however does not drive like a turd and has more or less the same power as before. Hopefully its just the diverter valve or boost pressure sensor. Is ebay my best bet for a lightly used JCW turbo?

They might be a little harder to find. I would check the DV and other items before just going to a turbo. The diaphragms on the older one could be shot.

I would look into just rebuilding yours. Unless it was a catastrophic failure, a few companies use our shell and put bigger compressor fans and sturdier parts to squeez out about 25 psi. The rebuild costs about $800.

G pop shop may have a rebuild kit. You can send your turbo to them, they rebuild it and have it back to you pretty quick. They rebuilt the center housing on one for my WRX and had it back to me in less than a week.

Actually, there are a lot of threads praising GPOP's K04/K03 hybrid kit.
