What aftermarket GPS unit are you using?
 

Just curious on what aftermarket GPS units that others are using in their clubman's? Would be interested to see pictures of where you guys are mounting them within the interior and how well are wires hidden. Thanks!

I don't have my Clubman yet, but I'm using a Garmin Nuvi 370. I'd be interested to see how people are mounting these, as well.

A Tom Tom Go 510 at the moment but I'll be upgrading to a Go 530 T as soon as it's available. I mount with Velcro fastener directly to the dash - alongside the rev counter - because I don't like windscreen suckers and want to fix and remove easily.

Now waiting for arrival of my 2008 MCS, but will use my Garmin Nuvi 650 (which I earlier purchased for use in rental cars.). I currently have a CayenneS with factory NAV and my wife has a BMW 535I with factory NAV. The Garmin interface is FAR superior to the NAVs in both the Porsche and the BMW, and I intentionally ordered the new Mini without NAV, intending to use the Garmin for the occasions when you actually need the NAV (as opposed to just watching the moving map display.)

I'm using a Garmin 460 - mounted with a 'cup holder' from Arkon.com -- love it cause I can remove it easily and keep it out of sight. I originally ordered the Kuda mount but returned it - too difficult to install (for a newbie with mods) and didn't want to risk any scratches.

Garmin 350 suction cupped to the speedo over the 130 -150 range. Figure if I'm going that fast I won't have time to look at the speedo anyway. It also blocks the passenger's view of the speedo, which comes in handy sometimes. :grin:

tomtom 910. It has maps for North America & most of Europe.

Garmin Nuvi 350 with suction cup mount but going to go with the MINI tach mount. The Nuvi rocks!

I'm using a Garmin 350 Nuvi. Just an FYI, Wal Mart.com had it for a $120 bucks less than everyone else that I shopped. The deal was only on WalMart.com. At any Wal Mart, the gps was the same price as everywhere else. So it's just a web special. My dad also got the same deal as me and he bought it about 8 weeks after I did.

Good thread. I'm considering venturing into the GPS world and am aiming at the Garmin Nuvi 650 - prices are dropping and Verizon gave us a $200 Best Buy gift card.:) Have been thinking about how to mount it. On the Nav forum there was someone who had it attached via suction cup to the rather large speedometer. :wink:

This is great feedback. I'm a newbie with an aftermarket GPS unit. How are folks running power to them? Going from the cigarette lighter or from the fuse box? (or some other way)

Gamin Nuvi 660 with a Kuda dash mount. Do a search on here for the Kuda mount for pictures. Was VERY easy to install with the tips fellow Mini owners on this site have posted. Took me no more then 15 minutes to mount it. I spent more time hiding the wire under and around the back of the dash.

I've owned, TomToms, Mio's and now the Garmin. The Garmin Nuvi series has HANDS DOWN the easiest interface to use for entering destinations.

Oh and with some careful shopping on Ebay you can get your hands on a reconditioned Nuvi 660 for under $250.00. Same warranty as new. I also recommend getting one with a minimum of the 4.3 inch screen. Anything smaller is annoying to use IMO.

Our MINIs are the same foward of the front seats, right? :) I have a Garmin Nuvi 360 with the Kuda mount. It was kind of a pain to install, but with my boyfriend's help I did it in less than an hour. It looks great and is really convenient both to see and use because you can keep your hand on the wheel. I hardwired it using some instructions here and my own brain. It's not hard to snake a USB next to the steering column, behind the center stack, over the passenger footwell, and into the fuse box. I ended up with a mini add-a-fuse connected to a 12v female plug, then hid that and the 12v to 5v usb adapter (phone charger) behind the stack, then ran the usb up to the mount. I wanted to have the Garmin plug to be able to take in another car with me.

I use the Nuvi 200W with the friction mount. I like the wide screen and the lack of other features I'm not going to use.

I have a tomtom 910. Great maps of N. Am and Europe built in.

We have a Garmin along with Sirius - they are both mounted with the ProClip mount together as one unit - :)

Garmin 360 suctioned on the speedo until I have the inclination for a Kuda mount. I prefer Garmin to all others. Just more intuitive, in my opinion.

Garmin 360 does the job just well .. very happy and whit the bluetooth

Even though I've an 08 MCS, I'll toss in another vote for the Nuvi 660 -- Amazon has brand new ones for around $330, and as others have noted, you can pick them up on eBay for $250 - $300 (got mine from eBay). I have a Kuda mount, but I'm doing adapters for other radio gear, so right now I'm doing the suction cup on the speedo trick, which works well.

'Tis a pity, though -- leaving a GPS in your car in this area seems to attract broken glass and sticky fingers.

Next steps are to bury the wiring, and do an exploratory dig to find out where the Mini's GPS antenna cable runs to, and extend that up to the Garmin. (Rumor has it that all recent Minis build with an antenna that has FM, sat, and GPS.)

We have a Garmin 750 and I love it. We used to have the Garmin 3600 but it died after 4 years and 115K miles. Now I'm trying to figure out how to mount it. Currently we're using the Garmin bean bag.

And on a related note - why aren't there any aftermarket GPS/XM combo units available? It would seem like a great "fit" for these two items to be integrated into one unit...

My wife and I both got the MINI adaptor installed at about $250 each. I then got a Garmin 360 on Ebay for just over $200 including shipping. It works fine and was less expensive than the $7500 the dealer wanted for the adaptor and the MINI Garmin

Wow, what does the dealer want for $7,500? What's included in that price? That's a serious chunk of change.

I think he was being sarcastic or at least making an exorbitant example about how branding can rip people off.:nod:

I have a Garmin Nuvi 660 and love it! Currently still using the suction cup mount, but looking at several of the dash mount options. I like the clean look of the Kuda mount, but looks too advanced for me.

I have had a Nuvi 660 for about 9 months now and love it. This past weekend I installed the Kuda mount in my new Clubman using the instructions (by Unixgal) in link posted earlier in this thread. I was nervous popping the dash pieces off of driver's side, but I took my time and followed the instructions. The result is terrific. Placement of the Nuvi is within very easy reach from the steering wheel. Looks great!

We also thought of this and like the idea, however are concerned that it will leave suction cup marks or some other non-removeable blemish on the speedo glass/plastic. Have you (or anyone else who's done this) noticed anything? We have the Garmin Nuvi 650.

Mine's been on and off the speedo quite a bit lately, and other than the place where my husband licked the suction cup and stuck it on, I can't even tell where I put it. And a damp rag will remove the evidence of his way to "help" on a cooler day when I was putting it on.

Thanks for the prompt & positive confirmation, caulyne. :) Had been afraid of permanently marking the glass, but we just tried it and it works great!:nod: Actually a perfect place for a GPS, IMO; no fuss, no muss, and best of all no lingering evidence (will keep a microfiber towel handy just in case)! :thumbsup:

The Nuvi 350 which I owned prior to the Mini purchase. The dealer threw in the factory tach mount and charged me $100 for the install. It's a neat install, and the Nuvi is snug to the left of the tach, visible through the wheel.

DanH, any chance you can post a pic of your set up? Sounds cool. What is the factory tach mount you mention - is it something the dealers carry? If so, I may have them do an install of this before I pick the car up.

i recently got a tomtom one 3rd ed. for $75 shipped. very happy with it so far. i hacked it so i get custom start & end screens & some really funky voices.. :lol:

Waiting for my MCS (only a few days more!). BUT - I've had a MIO 520 widescreen gps for a while now, and will be using it w/ the MINI.

The MIO is a decent unit, but the Garmin is a superior product. At the time, I wasn't willing to spend $550 vs $300. I'm happy enough w/ my MIO but next time I'll buy a Garmin - 660 equivilent.
