Not anything I would trust on the road. I think NASCAR uses some tear away film, but I don't think it would be street legal. From what I've heard it gets pretty cloudy pretty fast sort of like motorcross tear-offs for goggles.

Any reputable glass company will warranty their own work so your dealer is just trying to scare you into paying them $500

sorry manu06... i missed a few posts from earlier... yes, it was Roadshow. generally they are nice, although i haven't had much done there yet, but i knew they weren't gonna cover this. a memphis club member was also denied by the dreaded pen.

i completely agree, but i can hear them now... "windshield wipers aren't working? didn't you get your glass replaced somewhere else? sorry, that's not covered..." or some similar BS story.

Fortunately (and I highly recommend it!) I have glass coverage on my MINI (and have had on my past 3 cars).

The MINI dealership here uses a mobile replacement service. They used an OEM windshield, changed it in my driveway and it cost me $50!

It's a very small addition to your policy and covers ALL glass...mirrors, lights/lamps...VERY MUCH worth it!

Hope you find someone good that won't stick you for $500! No wonder you're
yikes... first month! poor Jake! but smart owner!

if my insurance doesn't cover this, i wonder if they will they be flexible in changing the insurance coverage to cover it in the future? i use USAA, so I'm thinking they probably will since they are a pretty great company... and i guess it is a slight increase in the premium, so that's good for them. got to call them tomorrow.

Just don't pay the dealer to do this. I had my PPG glass installed for less than half that price and the glass place split my deductible so I only ended up paying about $100.

Today I found out that I could drop my comprehensive deductible from $250 to $0 for less than $6 a year, so I went with it.

I wish I knew about this sooner: http://www.clearplex.com/

My windshield has a couple of tiny pin head sized dings so I don't think I qualify.

I am suprised Roadshow would be that way...they tend to be pretty lenient about most stuff. I feel your pain though...every morning I get stuck behind 4-5 dumptrucks taking their load of suburban sprawl towards Fayette County. I had one ding repaired only to get dinged again a few weeks later right on top of the original ding! The pitting in the windshield is getting so bad that it is hard to see when I am driving towards the sun.

The first ding was fixed by Jack Morris auto glass...I went to the Winchester location on my luch break. They were pretty quick. State Farm covered the whole thing. I was actually thinking of heading over there today at lunch.

so i just called Abra Auto Glass...

new windshield
- installed
- including molding (top i think)
- taxes and labor
- lifetime warranty
- 1 free rock chip repair in first year
= $222

the $500 price from Roadshow is BS. i realize this is how BMW makes money, but really... this is a bit ridiculous. wouldn't they rather make a little less money, have more business and their clients happy? (i guess that not capitalism.)

i found out my comprehensive deductible is $100 (which hopefully covers windshields), so I have to decide if I should give $122 to Abra and chance that Roadshow might deny me any future warranty coverage if problems come up. Abra warranties their work, too... i guess just anything outside of the windshield that their installation my foul up, MINI could deny. hmmmm

or

give $400 to Roadshow to give me another piece of crappy OEM glass. (oh, i'm assuming the Abra glass will be different but I need to check that out).

what do people think?

either way, i'm waiting until after driving to and from the Dragon to do anything about it.

Having read MANY posts regarding windshield issues, I think the odds of actually having some "OEM" windshield claim that actually gets covered under warranty is very, very slim. Sounds like 95+% of the time, they find SOME reason why it's not covered (the dreaded pen test, etc.).

I would put the most affordable glass in there I could find, from a reputable company that warrants their work. We now know that MINI's eat windshields like TicTacs. So might as well (a) get a cheap one and (b) get your comprehensive dropped to $0 deductible. That's what I did. I need a windshield also - and will also wait until after MOTD.
