Is this all the time for you? My 06 5spd has a stiff feel going into 1st but it comes and goes, sometimes it's smooth as butter but every now and then it's very stiff. Dealer can't figure it out.

yes, now it is all of the time. one day it was fine, next day stiff. new shift cables made it "driveable" but there is no spring back from 1st/2nd to neutral and the springback from 5th/reverse is weak at best.

I have an R50 with the midland tranny. When my gears were getting sticky, it ended up being my tranny failing. Hope this is good warning. Go for the 6 speed swap.
