maybe a vaccum leak. But first I would try to take it by a parts store and have them check the code. once you get that we can figure it out!

Gas cap lose? Although on many newer MINIs there's a light just for this.

The code the car is producing is the best way to know.

well if it's random then you can assume it's prior to the individual plugs or injectors . so you need to establish if it's fuel or spark . check the connector at the coil pack ;see if there's any corrosion on the brass . if so clean with scotch bt. pad . reconnect with white lithium or dielectric grease . and then try it . if it were fuel i'd think you'd get lean codes too but maybe not . it sounds electrical though . if it continues see if you can find a known good coil to try . or a cheap used one on the for sale section . luck.

I am not a mechanic but your OBD2 scanner may not be the correct tool? I was going to buy one too for my MCS and then I ran across this FAQ after a knowledgeable friend told me the OBD2 scanner might not be able to read BMW MINI code. I ultimately bought the Peake Research MINI factory code scanner instead.

It is questionable whether OBD-II Code readers will work with your MINI. According to their web page Peake Research specializes in fault readers for BMW and MINI (R5/EMX) and they are not OBD-II Code readers. See this from Peake's website on their FAQ page regarding the R5/FCXII reader which I believe would also be true for the R5/EMX factory-code scanner, which is their MINI scanner model:

R5/FCXII vs. OBDII tools:
1.) The R5/FCXII is not an OBDII device, it is a factory-code scanner. Meaning, it reads the full range of detailed BMW factory codes (which are the same codes the dealer has access to.) In contrast, OBDII tools use a government-mandated, generic code language, and do not read any BMW factory codes. OBDII is not inherently bad, but for BMWs and other European makes, OBDII tools suffer significant limitations. The two most common complaints about OBDII are a.) "unknown code" messages, or misleading codes that prompt unnecessary replacement of perfectly good engine components, and b.) the OBDII device would not reset the service reminder lights.

If you have any specific questions you can contact Carol at Peake Research. She was very helpful to me. support@peakeresearch.com
It's worth an email.
