Ridiculous First Time Tire Buyer Question

Forgive me... I've never bought tires before.

I just received my shipmet from TireRack and was about to head out the door to get them put on... when a thought hit me, "Aren't there supposed to be inner tubes?"

Or is that just on a bycicle.

Thanks for taking the time out of your day to answer this silly question.

Automotive tires do not require inner tubes.

About the only case where you might have to worry is if you got a set of honest-to-goodness wire-spoke wheels. In that case, there are dozens of holes in the rim where the outer ends of the individual spokes are mounted. Those holes aren't always airtight, even after the spokes have been installed.

Some wire wheels require tubes, some have a rubber sleeve that's wrapped around the rim before the tire is installed, and some others are airtight enough that neither tubes nor sleeves are required.

If you bought run-flats, you might want to check with the shop that you are having do your install to make sure they will do it. When I got mine, I took them to a tire-rack approved installer who said they could handle run flats. After they were done, the shop owner said "never again"...
