What is the real difference in your opinion

Has anyone drove the base MC and the S 2007, both with auto. Is it a waste of money to get an auto S in regards to feel and speed compared to the base. I'v been told that the base is now quicker and with an auto I won't be able to tell a significant difference in the driving "fun" or experince. My budget only allows for a standard S or base MC with a few options and both will incude an auto as I drive in a lot of California traffic. Thanks

I'll first state that I have not driven any 2007 models. But I am sure I can make this statement; there will definitely be a difference in the fun or experience with an S compared to a base model Cooper. That's not to say you can't have fun in a base model. But there are most assuredly significant differences that set them apart.

I have an Auto S 05 and I drove a base model 05 before I ordered. Big difference. I can't imagine, based on the reviews, that the gap has narrowed much on the 2007 models.

Based on instructing at autocross schools and DE's in both, the Base S with the Auto is a LOT more fun than the CVT'd MC... The CVT is such a beating...

The MCSa (MCS with auto) is actually quite a fun car to drive!

Different? Yes. Difference in fun? Not really...

But I do agree that the CVT tranny is a whip...

The 07 does not have a CVT tranny in any model.

We drove an MC and an MCS back to back to compare models, if you do this you will buy the S, no doubts.

The difference is very large.

Only YOU can decide which one will suit YOU best.

You must test drive both, it's as simple as that.

If you don't test drive both, you leave yourself potentially open to an extreme case of buyer's remorse later.
