I agree, and every now and then a reminder is needed. A co-worker (great kid, only 21) was killed a few months ago by a drunk driver that slammed his truck into my friends car while on the highway. One descision effects hundreds of others in this case, and probably most all cases like this. If you need to drive, think, dont drink.

Man, I hope that driver and anyone else in the car are OK... That's about the worst-looking accident I've seen a MINI in yet (and no, that's NOT my way of asking for someone to find something worse...)

 

That is probably a good argument for why 18 year olds should not be driving MCSs. It also looks as though that tree has been hit before, hence the white paint.

I hope for the drivers sake that he was alone in the car and no one else was injured. As for the driver, it was his choice. As long as he doesn't injure anyone else I say let Darwin take care of it. Do we really need his genes in the pool?

 

Look man, as a 19 year old, I do take offense to that statement. I know I am not the best driver in the world, far from it, but I did pay for my own car. I say if you're making the money, 80% of the time you are somewhat of a responsible person who works hard and takes pride in his stuff. Just because one kid made one mistake (albeit, a very a big one) doesn't mean that you shouldn't be telling people "18 year olds shouldn't have MCSs". Should all gun owners not be allowed to have guns because one of them killed someone? If it's your money, and you worked for it. Buy it, and be careful.

Just based on your insurance rates, a 19yo driving a 'hot hatch' is a massive risk compared to someone that is a little older. The average teenager has way to much faith in their own abilities and the accident instance is huge. As you get older you will realize this.

Comparing guns with sporty cars is not really that valid.

The chances of you staking an MCS are (in the insurance industry eyes) much greater than the chances of you stacking a similar value but more sedate car. The chances are that the speed at which you stack it will be higher and the outcome has a much greater risk of being fatal. The average driver of your age will show off, use the car to impress people, give rides at high speed to hot chicks etc, behaviour which is not only dumb, but because the car is quicker than an average car, has far harsher consequences. A quick handling, rapidly accelerating car and an inexperienced driver with excess testosterone is a terrible combination.

If you can afford it, good for you, if you have taken driving classes to enable you to understand how to handle it, even better. If you are responsible and you drive within your limits and the limits of the road, not to mention the conditions, even better. If you never show off in it (I mean really, who are you trying to impress ?) fantastic !

But that would indicate that you are not really average for your age

 

Do we even know the guy was drinking or is the photo just being shown as a scare tactic? Was he drinking, was he driving crazy fast, was he run off the road by someone else?? It would be nice to read the story that goes with the pic.

What is an MCSs?

 

What if I put it this way, SilverBullet - "It was a good thing *I* didn't have an MCS at 18." I was (in most things) responsible, a good student, and I'm amazed that I'm alive given the things I did in cars. Fortunately it's tougher to get into too much trouble in a '72 Datsun station wagon or a '74 Capri.
The limits of todays cars (and tires) are MUCH higher, but the solid objects are still just as solid - airbags can only do so much.
Try to take it as a word to the wise instead of an insult - it's not personal, it's statistical. There was a good article in AutoWeek had a great article earlier this year on teen driving deaths. Drive safely - whatever your age.

For what it's worth, I agreed with almost everything else he said... Judging someone purely by age can really short-change a person. That said, insurance actuary tables WERE created for a REASON.

Very bad MINI accident indeed.

Shows the great force transmitted to the MINI when hitting a solid non yielding object. If you are in the MINI it's not going to be pretty and injuries are likely to be massive (head and internal injuries).

About drinking and driving-
Very bad but also very very common. People don't estimate how impaired they can be. Police in my area have routine traffic stops around the holidays to catch drivers. Know your limits and designate a sober driver just to be safe or catch a cab if needed. The life you save may be your own and/or those of other innocent drivers or passengers on the road.

About age-
Being 18 or 19 and driving a MINI is all about being responsible.
If you are smart (hey you drive a MINI) and you are careful I don't see a problem with driving any performance car. But you need to know that speeding increases your chances of trouble and cuts reaction times. If you want to make it to 20 in one piece then you've got to be responsible.
Heck my first car was a Chevy Chevette. Nearly same engine displacement as my MINI with one fourth the power and one eighth the suspension.
Driving school (performance driving not drivers ed) is also very helpful. My son (aged 16) is in drivers ed and they do a good job educating young drivers.

About driving impaired-
The worse thing I see everyday is driving with a cell phone in use. It's so bad and we all are at risk. Only using a hands free cell phone should be the standard. People are so impaired driving and talking on the phone it is ridiculous and much much worse than driving drunk. Teach your family members about this very real danger before anything happens and watch for other drivers on the phone or being erratic. I've seen drivers on the phone swerving and hitting curbs while on the phone.

For what it's worth on the age issue.

I am WELL past 18,.. have a great driving record. No accidents, and my ticket was : not yielding right of way to ped in a crosswalk. So I'm a pretty conservative driver.

That said: my first comment after getting my MCS a few weeks ago was:

- Man, you could get into trouble with thing. I can see why a driver, new to this car, could find himself in a ditch, real quickly.

It's SO responsive. So Quick. You're tempted to throw it into a curve, because it's so fun.

But that's where experience comes in. I know not to test my limits ( yet ) , until I get a lot more familiar with the car, and my abilities.

An average 18 year old may not apply such discretion.

If/when you factor in alcohol, then that's a different game, because anyone from 16 - 80 makes bad driving decisions if they've had drinks.
