Stuck in Miami

Well, here I am stuck in Miami for business for a couple of days, no offence to anyone but I hate this town, one good thing is that I have spotted at least 5 Minis in the 3 hours I have been here

Blew out of that area of the country in the mid 80's with all the damn Yankee’s and carpet baggers moving in... I know your pain… Jackson Hole for the next 15 years... now back in a land of overpopulation...

I live in Tennessee, and work for an organization in Miami. I travel there often.... I feel you pain, amigo.

I get my kicks counting the number of cars that turn left at a red light after it turns red. Five cars is the average that I see. And all the black SUVs.... what's up with that? Every other car is a black SUV. A black car in Miami??????? Sooooo hotttttt

I too feel your pain. I'm an escapee from that part of the world. Important safety tip - never, ever get too close to a late model Cadillac with New York or New Jersey license plates - especially when you can't see the back of the driver's head

I can certainly empathize. I was born and raised in that purgatory disguised as "paradise", finally escaped this past June. My parents are still there and I'm trying to convince them to escape once they retire. Just stay in the airport and it'll be ok. Who am I kidding, it sucks in there too....

There are lots of MINIs though - but all of them are automatic...at least according to the MAs at the southermost MINI dealer in the continental US (my parents tried to test drive a manual, and they didn't even have one there)

And it's not just the blue haired caddy drivers you need to look out for. You're much safer just not driving on any major roadways (you won't be missing out on any fun driving though, that's for sure!).

Carpet Baggers? Don't forget the Scalawags! Damn you Millard Fillmore!

Were you refering to the 1880s?

No offense taken here either...I'm still imprisoned here! There are a lot of mini's and I think I have the only manual in town. Good luck finding a fun place to drive around...I get my kicks in the roundabouts in coral gables...staying withing the speed limits + or - 50mph...but its sad when everything is flat and straight, and people really seem to enjoy pulling out in front of others and going really slow.

Get out while you still can!

Enough with the Miami bashing

Yeah, sure this town has many problems, rude people and terrible drivers, but I am getting a bit sick and tired of all the Miami bashing as of late, specially coming from outlets such as time magazine and our "friend," rep Tom Tancredo of Denver, co, who called my hometown "A third world country"

If you are stuck here, allow me to show you some of the nice places we have here in Miami and perhaps introduce you to a vibrant Mini/MINI community (www.minisofmiami.com).

I been to several major US cities and all of them have their charms and their problems. If you hate Miami, that is your personal choice, really we don't want you here (We are way too many already)

My wife was born here (100% American as apple pie) and my baby boy was born here 3 weeks ago. I have been living here for 20 years and this place was the first thing I experienced of a country called "America". I live here and work here and really can't complaint about everything this imperfect but cosmopolitan and multi-cultural city has to offer.

Send me a PM and we'll go motoring to nice places

ha, the round abouts are my savior too, also down around the everglades it isnt so bad for fun(nish) roads to drive on

and to add on to C4's comment, i agree as cities go Miami isnt really that bad, it has its faults as he said but overall its pretty original in many aspects, and i like the charm it has due to that.

personally though im just not a fan of large cities, so i still want to get out of SFL

All Minis in Miami are automatic? Really?? that's is news to me. It seems to me Miami MCS owners from years '02-'04 went to great pains and expense to retrofit their 6-speed manual gearboxes with automatics...

Are you referring to Cuban Americans when you use the derogatory word, "carpet bagger"?

Oh puh-lease...

"In United States history, carpetbaggers were Northerners (Yankees) who moved to the South during Reconstruction between 1865 and 1877. They formed a coalition with Freedmen (freed slaves), and Scalawags (Southern whites) in the Republican Party, which in turn controlled ex-Confederate states for varying periods, 1867-1877."

Thanks for clarifying. I am not Cuban so I don't take it personally, but a quick look in wikipedia gave me the correct definition of this term. Still derogatory when used.

Here is the double course of Miami:

Miami is a cosmopolitan city, yet is unlike any other American city. To me there are worst "hell holes" than Miami. Neither Detroit or Cleveland seemed to me like places I would like to come back to. I would take Miami any day of the week over either of those cities.

I hope you guys in the midwest aren't getting snowed in. As for Jackson Hole it's 14 now and tomorrow is going to be a high 20 with a 6 degree low. It's 77 here now...great convertible weather. I have a manual too.

Didn't know there were so many "Miaminians" here in NAM. We hope to see you at future Minis of Miami meets.

I love Jackson Hole, Wyoming. We went there 4 years ago and hope to comeback there some day. We took a very early morning hot air balloon ride over Jackson Hole and near the Grand Tetons. I'll never forget the beautiful scenery from 2,800 feet suspended in total serenity. We went at the end of the summer, so can't even beging to imagine how cold that region must get at this time of the year.

Hopefully we'll get to retire in the cool mountains of the American west.

Man... if you hate Miami you obviously haven't seen all of it... Personally, I love it.. Miami has its shitty parts like anywhere else.. But its a truly multi-cultural place and unique in many ways.. I'll take Miami over the majority of cities in this great United States

As far as mini's being automatic, yeah maybe the MC's, but come on, who buys those things anyways haha.. Like C4 said, you forget 02-04 MCS's were Manual EVERYWHERE, Miami being no exception..

You gotta head out to SoBe and go clubbing, amazing night life... Head out to Miami Beach (although personally i hate the beach down here lol).. head out to coral gables, pinecrest, etc. for the nicer parts of town.. theres much to do here.. and SEVERAL MCS's, modded and not.. saw a GP yesterday..

as far as good roads to drive on.. theres several.. but you know everyyyonneee does the speed limit allwwayyyssss

GET OUT AND EXPERIENCE MIAMI BEFORE YOU BASH IT...

I don't understand the black car thing in a place as hot as this one. I have a friend of mine that insists on having black cars, yet he doesn't really take good care of them to begin with.

Oh yeah, the driving here is terrible, that's not even a point of discussion. I have driven in many parts of the US and I still feel that Miami has to be the absolute worst in this regard. People here are CRAZY and I mean it .

Most people say Seattle is horrible in terms of traffic, but in many times I have been there I never felt the traffic or the drivers were any worse than those in Miami.

If you want to stay in Florida but like a quiet town, I recommend Ormond Beach, some 15 miles north of Daytona Beach.

Life in Miami is very fast paced and there is an atmosphere of frustration in the air, so I totally relate from escaping our "3rd world enclave" from time to time.

Funny thing is that the advertasing "engine" behind MINI's successful campaign was based right here in Miami baby!

Crispin, Porter + Bogusky is based in ritzy Coconut Grove. Not bad for a 3rd world country, eh?
