Small Car Nation

The New York Times calls MINI a "personality car" in a story about the fact that small cars are currently outselling SUVs in the US.

You might need to create an account (free) to read the story.

thanks for sharing this article!

from the article:
"Less certain is when the market will be selling new subcompacts from the Ford Motor Company and the Chrysler Group, which have been left out of the rush of new models for now. Ford, however, says it has one under development, while Chrysler is looking for a Chinese partner to produce one, since it says it cannot build a profitable small car in North America."
and Ford wonders why it lost $5.8 billion. maybe it is because they are about 5-6 years behind in their thinking

bye, bye SUV!!!

Ford have small cars in non-USA markets - it doesn't take much "development" to ship one over to this country!

They got greedy with those high profit SUVs and now they are paying for it dearly. You have to wonder if people will go back to SUVs should gas prices drop a little more in the next few months or if they've learned their lesson. But it's nice to see some quality small cars finally making it to the market. I'm very interested in the Volvo C30 mentioned in the article, it's a great looking car and according the Top Gear it drives really well too.

You make a good point, but those cars probably wouldn't be too profitable. But then again, what's the difference between what's going on now? Those cars may not make a profit but it's better to have little or no profit than massive losses.
