Oil_Change

Anybody out there change their own MINI oil? I've heard that there is a special tool or piece that has to make its way from the old oil filter into the new one or else...?

I do know they recommend only MINI synthetic (aka Castrol Synthetic).

Thanks,

Greg

The only special tool really is the socket for the oil filter canister. It is a standard off the shelf 36mm socket. The key being not all hardward stores carry a socket that big.

The oil change itself is very easy to do. There are a # of posts about DIY and which oil to use. Here is a good one...

I only use AMSOIL synthetic... it feels like it provides better response and engine life. You do need the proper tools to remove the filter.
There's no special peice to keep, you just have to take the oil filter out and pop in a new one. When you're draining the oil, you should loosen the filter to break the seal since it's in a vertical position and hold it with a rag to contain any drips when you remove it.
Here's a good how-to.

also, outmotoring.com has the OEM filters for $6.95 or so + shipping.

Thanks

Thanks for all the quick responses. I'd bet money that one MA did indeed say that some part needs to make its way from the old filter into the new one - maybe he was thinking of the old O-ring. I don't know.

Thanks again!
