High expectations?? They should have.......the reviews from recent road tests are overwhelmingly positive.
The thing these folks don't get is that MINIs aren't just a case study or all about "buzz" or even about you-ification. The car is just blasted good....the real-life MINI-motoring experience far exceeding any buzz. That's why owners go bonkers...spending some time in the drivers seat.

They seemed to forget one thing: Its still a BMW.
At this point, I will never buy anything else other than BMW products. Comparing them to anyone else is not possible.

Really? Why is that? Curious.
As long as they continue on w/ their current marketing strategy and limit the number of cars exported the Mini (cars and brand) shall continue to prosper as they do today. Very few cars, after several years on the market, continue to sell at a premium the way second hand Mini's do.
