Drivetrain So... What do I need now?!
So... What do I need now?!
Ok then, so here is what I want to know... I have purchased an Alta "Twurbo" kit, to Twincharge my Mini Cooper S. What do you all sugest I get next to help me keep my engine running healthy and happy. Here are my ideas so far, although I cannot afford any of them at the moment..
WHICH OF THESE DO YOU THINK ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT AND WHY!
Dual Stage Boost Controller
The Alta "Hydra" computer (when it comes out)
400cc - 460cc fuel injectors
Fuel Pressure regulator (anyone know how much pressure it should be? 4 bar?)
M7 DFIC (if only I were rich!)
Ported & Polished Cylinder Heads (Which one would you all sugest for my application?)
Schrick Cam Shaft (or other if you have a sugestion)
Reinforced pistons (whatever is good)
not to mention the obvious
Brake upgrade
Suspension upgrade
Quaife LSD
Front and rear Strut Bars and the M7 Understrut System
Oh, and just FYI the car doesnt have to look pretty Im not overly a show car kind of guy (even though I do judge them) I wouldnt want to own one... Im just not OCD enough.
Thanks again,
- Johnny

If you’re running the base 16 psig, there isn’t too much you need to do. It would probably be better to not have a dual boost controller (electronic)... as it may become hard to not up the boost... just that once... Especially if your running stock injectors.
I would say though, if not planning on staying stock 16 psig for good, to invest in some injectors, with a bit of breathing room... this would of course necessitate a piggyback system like Hydra or an S-AFC to get the fueling right...
If and when Hydra is ready, i would jump on that! You could basically tune your own car and do everything and anything to it, yourself!
I would personally invest in gauges and diagnostic software... If you got autera or one of the palm based programs you could check EGT's, IAT's, injector pulse width, Manifold pressure, Temperatures, fault codes etc... and then i would invest in a wideband gauge, so you know if your injectors are running well and your not running lean...
So when you decide to up the boost you'll have an easier time adjusting fueling, timing and all the things that could go bang if not done right! If you got a head, you could probably run 2 psig lower boost and still make the same power.
Eric from Helix said when doing testing on his Turbokompressor car that his IAT's were lower while running 21.5 boost than a pulley'd S/C car, so i dont know if an intercooler would be absolutely necessary, at least when talking about the "most" important... This is of course doesn't include running higher than 22, which would of course mean getting reinforced pistons, stud bolts, etc... It will become alot more expensive after that...
Maybe get a lightened flywheel/stronger clutch/lsd! i drove my friends Twincharger with his new stage 2 clutch, and the bite on it is very nice...
Or... remove the S/C and run 16 psig and hit 300whp! That’s my plan... within the next year!
Good luck! and let me know when your installing the kit, I’ve got the same one (although not installed) and would love to come see and help out!
