My New Mini

Just bought her yesterday and wanted to say hello...

2002 Black MC with 42K miles. Previous owner did not take good care of her so I am trying to the basics. I just changed the oil with mobil 1 synthetic and reset the oil service indicatior which showed -5280. The previous owner told me I had 5000 miles for my next oil change then I read the manual.

It has a new clutch so I wont change the brake fluid but should I flush the coolant?

Also needs new tires bad. I looked at the tires when it was on the lift today and front tires from the inside are shot. Will replace then with 195/55/15 non run flats and then get it alligned. For right now I put the rear tires on the front. Any recommendations on tires?

The car has the dual roofs and the retractable blind system. I do not like it because it does not block the sun. Is there some sort of sunshade available?

I only got one key. Are there any alternatives for a spare other than dealer?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to NAM, redfusion...congrats on your new MINI!!

Check the tire forum for info on all that...there's lots of combinations that will work, depending on what you want.

Sunroof...yes, lots of people struggle w/ the mesh sunscreen and have found some clever solutions. I'll let them chime in on the specifics (I don't have a sunroof) but I just wanted you to know that there is help out there.

My '03 came with two keys and a small-ish valet. I think maybe one key came with the '02s but I'm not exactly sure.

I'd try to find some info from MINI_USA or local dealer based on your VIN. You'll be able to tell what routine maintenance has been done on your MINI and which has not (via a chip in the key!!!). Also you can find out about any software or other updates available.

I'd wait on the coolant til I had that info, unless you just want to do it. A note...there are apparently two places to fill the coolant system from. If not done properly you'll get a gurgling sound behind the dash. Not harmful it seems...but I'm sure you want to do it right.

Happy motoring!!!

Welcome to NAM! I have a perforated sunroof decal on my Cooper and it DOES block out a lot of the sun but I still wear a hat, anyway. On my S, I went with a solid decal and NO LIGHT bleeds thru, thus eliminating the need for a hat, and I can see the reverse side of the design perfectly.

CooperFlags and AesthetiCreations sell both.
