sleeping in a mini?

has anyone tried sleeping in a mini on a long road trip?

Other than just leaning the front seats back and sleeping in front, I was thinking it be possible to fold the rear seats down and the front seats forward and then sleep in the hatch area with my head / shoulders on the back of the front seats? Has anyone tried this?

I've got a long road trip and although I've booked hotels along most of the way, in some parts of wyoming it would just be easier/save time to just camp in the car for a few hours.

Any thoughts?

(btw, I did a search for this and all I came across was how to have sex in the MINI! Too bad I'm going with a guy friend of mine, and not my girlfriend! )

Thanks!

I think it would be too bumpy and hard. Especially, in my case, with the grocery bag holder attached to the back of one seat. I'd rather visit a Motel 6.

I would say, ditch the friend for the girlfriend but then again women want all the attention to themselves and cant handle being second to our MINIs specially on long trips
Im sure they wouldnt want to sleep in the back seat of a car anyway

koolmini does it every time he drives down to The Dragon from New York. He calls it Hotel MINI or the MINI Motel... Get one of those horseshoe-shaped squishy pillows for your neck, and just tilt back the seat!

Besides, now that the airlines are cutting back on "perqs" for travellers, I don't think they give the free pillows or blankets out anymore. Might be good to take 'em on the flight with you!

Take a lightweight travel blanket and an additional comfy pillow (or pick one up along the way). If this doesn't work out for you, Motel 6 is always clean and affordable...

It is the only thing I dislike about the MINI. I take a daily nooner ( Just got back from todays )

Of all my cars the Mini is the most awkward to sleep in. You need to jack the seat up and slide 1/2 the way forward to recline it to any decent angle.

Yeah, it works. Did it one night for cat nap on my cross country trip. Unfortunately my passenger seat wouldn't recline (I hadn't read about/fixed that 'feature') so I had to stay in the driver's seat with the steering wheel in the lap.
Don't know about two people though. Unless you can fit all the stuff in the boot and keep the seats up, the rear seats infringe on seatback reclining.

I have 'six pack marks' in the back of my passenger seat due to wifey reclining on a case of Scapegoat Ale (yum!) we picked up on a road trip to Montana.

I'd say you're better off bringing a tent and bags, but hey, I slept in cars a lot in my younger days.

He's flying east to pick up his new MINI and roadtrip it home, so carrying a tent, etc., aboard a plane may be a bit tricky!

can't exactly try it.. as i don't have the car yet.

How far do the front seats fold forward?

I'm thinking about bringing fold-out pads (like thermarest) to lay across the backs of the seats / hatch area

When I lived in Brookline, MA back in the late 70's early 80' I used to drive to Stowe, VT frequently in a Ford Fiesta: roughly the same size as a Mini. There were a couple of night when I couldn't get a hotel/motel room. Folded down the back seat and slept back there. My 6' 200 lbs body complained very loadly in the morning.... and that was when I was in my 20s. Now.... wouldn't even try. Unless it was some sort of life or death thing

I'm 6'2" 210 and that would never happen for me. I sit in the passenger seat jack it up and recline the back. Not to bad for my hour nooner. I guess it depends on how tired you are.

This thread is making me nostalgic for my days of sleeping in the crappy van with my bandmates in some podunk town. I don't get to rough it much these days, as the wife does not see the beauty in the simplicity of sleeping in an automobile or even a tent. Her idea of camping is a $100K+ RV, which I have no hope of ever providing. Ahh, roughing it. Ya don't hear much about that these days.

Don't even think about it. Unless, maybe, you're a midget.
1. The compartment's not that long - <4ft to the seat back, 6' all the way to the downtubes/dash.
2. There is a well in the boot, so NOTHING is even - if you move the seats forward there's a huge gap aka passenger footwell.
3. If you bring anything, you'll have to leave it outside.

Sleeping in the seats is your only real option.

There is, of course, another far more risque definition of nooner but doing that in a car can get you arrested in certain states

NETHACK....I too was living in Brookline/Alston in the late 70's and had a 78 Fiesta, Sport option...loved that car...I made a padded platform to convert the car to a short double bed when the rear seats were folded down....my girlfriend and I fit in there just fine

Last year at MOTD I slept in my car Saturday night after the midnight runs. I live about 30 minutes away and originally planned to go home for the night, BUT I had a 22 mile range left, so decided to stay there. I parked at the fontana village store and borrowed a blanket and pillow from cool asian guy from Atlanta named Chris (I believe he totalled his MINI last summer and is no longer on this site). So I leaned the seat back and fell asleep quite comfortably. I woke up around 5am because I was cold, so I turned the car on for a few minutes, got warmed up, then went back to bed. I wouldnt really recommend it, but it is a good "bonding" experience between you and your MINI.

I know this isnt his senario, but, if you had no backseats, would it be possible to just lay in the trunk? It is what I do now in my civic, except, the backseats just fold flush with the trunk, it isnt bad back their.
