How much room is there under the seats?

Last week I went to the auto sound shop and ordered all the sound components that will be installed as soon as I get the MINI. As far as amps go, I got a JL 250/1 for the sub and a 300/4 for the other speakers. Will these be able to fit under the seats?

Just did it!

Under the driver and the passenger seats, there is a secret compartment that is filled with a styrafoam block. The block is approxiamtely 15" wide, 10" long, and 2" deep.

I will hopefully have pictures up in the next 24/48 hours on www.mininv.com.

i tried to explain what we have done to this point. If you have any questions, i can try to help you!

Jeff

The dimensions of the cavity are 16.5" x 10.5". The depth is tricky though. It varies along the 16.5" dimension from 1.5" - 2.75" deep. The depth is where most amps will not fit. If the amp is only slightly too tall, you might be able to raise the seat rails with some spacers (be aware of any safety issues that may cause). Here are a couple of pics from my install. One cavity has two amps in it (they're very small), and the other has a small Clarion subwoofer in it:

The amps are blaupunkts, but it's a line called the T-series that they don't make anymore. You can still find them on ebay sometimes, and the model number will begin with "PA". There are 4 channel and 2 channel amps in this line.

Here's a current auction for one.

The T-series claim to fame was their small size, and they also claimed that most of the power consumed went to amplification rather than wasted as heat. So that was another reason I felt safe putting them under the seats.

I don't really recommend the Clarion sub. It's not powerful enough. It fills in the low frequencies ok, but that's about it.
