Interesting news from USAA...

Just called USAA to see about getting a 'rider' insurance policy for my aftermarket whatevers in the car... Audio, exhaust, etc... Something to cover those parts from damage or an accident.

According to the rep on the phone (after asking her supervisor), anything 'permenantly installed' in the vehicle is covered under the auto-policy, wether it is aftermarket or not... And anything which is temporary, portable, or otherwise removable is covered under my home-owners insurance.

Good news for USAA peeps!

EDIT: Oops, guess this might go under OT... But lots of Mini owners have USAA, and have aftermarket parts under the hood.

Thanks for the info, Wag! So the portable Nav systems would fall under homeowner's, which I also have with USAA!

The same applies to most all insurance carriers. However... if the car is ever totaled you will recieve the book value of the car NOT including mods.

Nope, this has been gone over before. When I just had car insurance renewed they specifically said (and I called to verify), ANY aftermarket parts including wheels and tires worth more than $600 had to have a rider. I think they were particularly worried about aftermarket stereos that can run very expensive cause they mentioned them alot.

I guess thats good if the car is totaled because you WILL get the aftermarket parts value back.

This does not apply to factory warranted parts installed by the dealer (e.g., JCW)

USAA requires rider coverage on ALL aftermarket mods if you want them covered. Also, they will cover the JCW package. Just like Dinan and so forth. I'll go next door and ask them since the West Coast USAA operations buildings are next to me.

Farmers does that also, it's a blanket statement policy. They don't care
they figure the more money they pay out to you the more penalty you pay :impatient
