Finally a short shifter that will allow the use of the factory style ****. This is good news for any of you who may have purchased a Whalen shift machine($$$). Now I can order my CUSTOM **** and not worry about having to get a different style if I ever decide to go to a short shifter.

Are you familar with Flash Davbret? A mean flash site would look cool, it is kinda hard to update though.

 

The Madness website is enhanced with Flash currently. But I honestly don't like to use it too much. We're not all on broadband yet and Flash can kill you on a 56k. We want to allow all people coming to our site to be able to navigate with ease. Flash can slow things down considerablly if you lack a high speed connection....and it can get too "glitzy" in the process. Now if our products needed to be covered up by showing glitz and glam that would be one thing, but our products rock and don't need the frilly stuff. All the same I am going to be making some changes to the visual format of the site to make it more eye pleasing. You ADD folk will have to look elsewhere for wacko flash movies and stuff.

Amen! I wish more companies used this philosophy on their websites.

Any ballpark ideas of cost for the product / install? $200? $500? (And will Randy post a how-to? )

Ok, just spoke with George and here's what I can say:

Rogue is involved. Will be a 20% reduction in throw. It will allow for the dust shield to be retained. Install all done from under, none from inside the cabin. Will retain the stock shift lever. This is a pure addition. Nothiing will be removed from your shift assembly. The prototype is done and being tested currently. It is made of hardened steel. It is a small part that can be readily fabricated once the green light is lit. 2-3 weeks out if all goes well.

As far as the how-to, absolutely! I'm going to start a policy of if you use the how-to, you have to buy the stuff from MINI-Motorsport though !

I'm working with George and UUC as well. I will probably end up with two different products - we'll see!

a sort of filed report/heads-up:

i've had the Atra short shifter in my car for about 1000 miles with no problems whatsoever. Although it is designed for a thread-on ****, I put a setscrew into the stock **** and that locks it on there just fine. the **** ends up about an inch loer and the shifting action is very crisp. I have it set at near-shortest shift range. the install is straightforward, but you have to remove the exhaust and tunel heat shield and work in the car and under it, snapping some pretty tight ball joints (the stockcable-to-rod-ends_ apart and back together.

the entire action pivots around a centrally located ball; left and right movement doesn't get changed and is controlled by a small extension shaft on the ball. Fore and aft movement is changed by how much of the shaft extends below the ball. With the Altra, the shaft can be slipped up and down and setscrewed tight. As you extend the shaft down, you gain more leverage, shortening the throw, but the extension eventually will interfere with the dust shield located in the tunnel area, requiring its removal. This point on the car is remarkably protected, so you may get away with not having the shield in place.

If the Rogue unit is mounted from under the car only, it must fit over the existing shaft extension somehow and lengthen it? It would seem that it would suffer from the same interference with the dust shield if it is to gain the same amount of shift reduction? we are only talking about 1/4" to 1/2" length change, but that is enough.

Any word from UUC on short-shifter availability? I am itching to get the Alta, but somehow attatched to UUC's beautiful design. Ballpark price would be great too.

 

Giddie up to that, can't wait for a great SS. I find myself grabbing way down on the "shaft" (ha ha), just to get the SS sensation.

 

It sounds just like the Mini Mania one??? I have one already but haven't installed it yet.

 

The Madness version will be similar to the Mania product, but will use multiple set screws, not just one, which we feel leaves the Mania product vulnerable to breakage.

We're playing with Car & Driver Mag this week down at Cali Speedway. Once we're back home I'll find out the latest about the tooling on this product...ie, where are we in terms of being able to offer the product for purchase. :smile:

I'm looking forward to getting a SS kit for my Cooper. I have a 4k road trip coming up in 5 weeks.

20% shorter shift X 4k miles of shifting = less work, right?!!! J/K!

Will the Madness SS kit require any modification to the dust cover?

 

I would like to find out a price for this product as soon as possible...its been a while since the first time I have seen it on the Madness site. When can we expect to see it?

That's the prototype going in my car. Hee hee. Sitting on my work bench right now. From my initial talking with George there will be 2-4 set screws and not the locking ring as you see here.
