driving school
I found out about this up coming driving school and am excited about going. Thought perhaps some other would be also. Best money spent has been on my first Phil Wicks driving school.
North Carolina Speedway (a.k.a. Rockingham), October 29-30

OK - This is a PCA (Porsche Club of America; Hurricane Region) event, but it's open to all makes/models and licensed drivers. It is a GREAT opportunity to learn what your car can do in a controlled environment.
Incedentally, there is also info on the page about buying track gear (helmets, suits, etc.) if interested.
For those that aren't aware, Drivers Education events don't classify as "racing" so it is covered in your auto insurance policies (most) and doesn't effect your health insurance (most), etc. It is still high-speed, performance driving on a closed course, and requires safety equipment (often just a helmet and roll bar for convertables) and liability waiver. Beginners get theory/classroom and practical instruction before they're turned loose on the course.
This is high-octane sort of stuff!

if you want a good driving school check out the BMW CCA schools in your area. around NC we go to VIR. it's a great track and there are always a few MINIs there. they are in april july and october. they are the cheapest schools around and your get just as much class time as track time. they cost about 300 bucks for a saturday and sunday school. you do have to join the BMW CCA. it's cost 30 bucks a year. to get into the school you have to send your application the very first day the accepted post mark is allowed. you will NOT get into a BMW school if you wait til the second day.

the porsche and audi clubs also have good DE's there. however, with little or no class time. they are also much more lax in their safety rule enforcement on the track. the porsche club will let you in with a BMW club number but the audi makes you join their club.
go learn how to drive the right way. we all think we are great drivers. go learn how wrong you are.

I sent an email off to Coco tonight and here is her reply;
I had to close student registration until we get more instructors. Please have them send their registration form and check to be added to the waiting list. I'm hoping to get another two to four instructors, but no guarantees. Right now - no one on the waiting list so they have a good shot at getting in. The fee did go up to $310 after Oct 1. We have plenty of garages ($25/weekend)!!!! I will gladly assign the Minis to adjacent spaces if you like.

Also the Phil Wicks driving School is coming up in November.

VIR is a great place but if you have a convertable like me, you can not run on the track unless you have an approved full competition roll bar.

True, VIR does not allow topless cars without a full roll cage. Even then, it has to be two inches above your helmet and you have to use a 5 or 4 point harness. I've seen bad wrecks at driving schools at VIR. There is a good reason they require this.
The only two car wreck i've seen there was between two female drivers at a corner named "*****". How odd? It was at a porche event. The car that got run over was an open top race preped 914.
