I don't think anyone can really answer that because "best" at what?

define 'best'

you mean sound?, power gains? weight loss? price? alot of factors

miltek is the best all rounder

sound? magnaflow sounds amazing, it makes awesome power too... but its loud...

weight loss go with one ball or any of the one sided system like alta or quicksilver

price then megan or scorpion... megan can be had for 420 US, scorpion available at 550

great summary Kyrian. You've pretty much summed up the various categories of "best exhaust", with the exception of including JCW exhaust into the mix, which I believe is the quietest next to Borla Sport, and tips the scale at the heavier side, and generates a bit less power relative to the others you've mentioned.

Then again, if the definition of best as in not raising any eyebrows when taking in the dealer for service or questions about how it affects the factory warranty, then JCW is pretty much the only choice.

Lastly, if budget is really the issue, then the best exhaust is the OEM factory exhaust... you just can't beat the $0 cost!

I have the Milltec, which I personally consider the best, in terms of quality, weight savings, appearance, sound and power. It also seems to be the easiest to install with fewer parts.

Hey Vegasdan:

Just wondering how the Militec sounds for the long haul? We read about all of these different exhausts and how awesome they are in town, but some of them (Magnaflow I've heard) are very loud and not fun for a long drive. How is yours?

I know it's been asked before, but I don't think we've heard from you.

Thanks in advance.

The MILLTEK is smooth sounding at cruising speed, not a bit too loud or droney.

chow thanks for that post, I was leaning towards the miltek but after reading and hearing that I think I like that alta sport tune the best now.

I have the Milltek and think it’s best all-round for my likes.

As for the sound doing the long haul, it is smooth and quiet at highway speeds. Driving to the Dragon and back this last May, approximately 1000 miles of open road driving, I didn’t notice it a bit as far as the sound.

The Milltec is quiet when you are cruising. It doesn't drone like some performance exhausts. When you step on it it sounds-well-like a proper British sports car should sound. So keep a stiff upper lip and go for the Milltec.

Milltek gets my vote too. Good overall numbers, great sound, no drone at cruise, excellent quality in construction, good fitment with no issues that sometimes are issues with aftermarket systems. The nice throaty snarl when getting into it is addicting, as well as the burble that happens during gear changes and on/off throttle.

I put Remus exhaust on mine MCS. I think it has the best looking tips. As for sound, I like it because it has the rich deep sound. The drive by sound is excellent!!! The big plus for me is that I can still listen to the stereo without any problem.

You can check it out at

I got a great deal on this from Remus USA a couple of months back on eBay. They were selling it around $249 I think. Turner MotorSports put it in for me (They used to sell it for about $800).

$249 is darn cheap!

That's really nice sound! Pretty close to what I have!

i'd like to know more about pilo's new header.. been thinking of doing one just to add a bit more sound to the engine... either that or a crank pulley but as the jury is out gaining miles i guess i'll have to wait

miltek is defenitely everyone's favourite.. not too loud, loud when needed, and it doesnt drone...

i love my scorpion, but sometimes i wish i paid for a UUC... till i lift off my throttle.... burp burp POP!!!

cpraser,

I also have the Remus exhaust. I also purchase it from REMUSUSA at ebay. I only hear the sound when I get close to 4K. Otherwise it is pretty quiet. I like the tips and they match perfectly with the new MINI headlights design. I do not have them, but may plan to change them to match the exhaust tips. I have the OBX header. Again , the combination is louder than stock, but not loud at all. I like how the tips "grow" in lenght when the exhaust is hot, versus when it is cold. I did the installation myself and it was not that difficult at all.

Lots of highway miles and Milltek is great. It only barks when you need it. Cool tips too!

I have a Milltek cat-back on order, hopefully I'll have it in a couple of weeks.

In the end I went with the Milltek because a) I love the soundclips I've been able to find, b) I like that the muffler cans are small and unlikely to be seen from the rear, unlike the oem or JCW systems, c) the tips are so much better than stock IMO and d) so many happy customers can't be wrong! I can't wait to get it, it will only heighten the driving pleasure of my MINI I'm sure.
