My Supercharger Went Out
My Supercharger Went Out
Well, this is odd. I have an '04 S, built 11/03, just turned 30,000 miles. There had been a ringing noise in the engine that was audible for a few weeks. People commented on it at our last rally. So I finally freed up time for an appointment at the dealer. Took it in Monday, picked up my free rental (Hyundai Santa Fe). Went back in later to see what was up and was told by my SA that my supercharger was being replaced! Had one in by Tuesday and installed. Ringing noise gone, but now another "chirp" noise the tech didn't like. Hmmm. As the days progressed, he ended up replacing the tensioner (I think-says "adj pulley" on receipt), and finally the crank pulley. Note on receipt says "After removing front crank pulley found paint flaking & rust coming out of center of damper."
"Replaced front crank pulley-damper. All noises are gone. Test drove-all ok at this time."
I don't know what to make of it all. I guess they will be sending the blower to BMW NA for them to dissect it and maybe figure out what the noise was. And remanufacture it and send it back out. Because my receipt says I have a reman charger installed now.
Just wanted to put this out there for info. I have no answers, neither did the dealer. It took a few days, but I had a vehicle provided to me for free. And the work was all under warranty, so no charge to me. So I have a bunch of new parts on my engine, all for free. I am happy.
No mods on car, not raced.
Cheers!

My 12-02 build '03 had it's blower replaced at about 1200 miles. It had always had a little bit of an intermittent tinkly sound at idle. It started making a belt-squeal kind of noise. Dealer replaced belt & tensioner & that fixed it for a week or two. When I took it back in they replaced the blower with a reman. unit. No more squeal or tinkle.
Shortly thereafter the car started ticking from pass. side under load. Drove it that way for a while. Took it in & after some head scratching, they replaced the crank damper. That stayed fixed for a few thousand miles, & has slowly come back. I don't think it's harmful, but it is annoying. I'm hesitant to complain now, as I've wrenched on the car a bit since they fixed it last. Seems easy enough. Maybe I'll replace the damper myself one of these days..
Glad yours is fixed!
