Greetings all. Shortly after I rebuilt the N12 engine in my '09 project car; the automatic transmission went Tango Uniform (a military expression for the upper torso of a dead naked female laying on her back ... you get the picture.) I purchased a used 6-speed auto trans from LKQ online, the new (used) transmission got new output shaft seals, filter, filter pan gasket etc. After filling the transmission with fluid per the BWM TIS instructions and clearing the adaptations in the TCU, the transmission started to slip. After discussing the situation with my local AAMCO tech, the first thing he suggested was "cavitation". Well he was exactly right.
After running a can of BG flush through the transmission for 300 miles I pulled the pan and inspected the filter. What I found was a clean filter, clean magnets, and the filter was making contact with the bottom of the pan restricting fluid flow. The filter I installed was a Wix WL10416. I replaced it with a Beck/Arnley 044-0391. The Wix filter is not compatible with R56 MINIs.
Here's what I saw in the bottom of the pan.
Then I compared the new filter (left) with the Wix (right)
When I contacted Wix, they asked for the VIN, and came back that the filter on the right is for the MINI Cooper S (no my Justa). So I went to realOEM.com to see if there was a different transmission and or fluid pan for the Cooper S with an automatic transmission. The Justa and the Cooper S with automatics share the same transmission with the same fluid pan part number, so Wix doesn't have a clue.
If you're servicing your automatic transmission, make sure your replacement filter is the same height as the old one. After I installed the new filter, the transmission was working perfectly.
