2014 F56S

I noticed that if I drive the car only a few miles, under 10, and visit a doctors office for an hour that upon restarting it grumbles some. Drops right in after under 20 seconds but .. it seemed like starting it from bone cold.

Recently I bought bimmerlink and wanted to check the coolant temp to see if it was indeed cold or was it something else. I am not really a car guy but I have had a ton of motorcycles and some that I would call cold blooded and need a little extra time before they were happy.

The wife and I ran off on a trip that was 12.5 miles away with half of that being Highway. the Mini only reached operating temp .. which I read was about 220 degrees about 3 minutes from my destination. Hadnt figured out yet how to change metric to Standard so it was reading 101C.

So is the 3rd gen kind of cold blooded or ??

My 2015 F-56 S goes from bone cold to Operating Temp. in 2.5 mi. about 6 min.s @ 30mph. If you can't get close to that you got a thermostat problem, stuck wide open if you got one at all OR a gauge problem

 

The 3rd gen cars have a variable coolant pump and system, so coolant temp comes up pretty quick after a cold start. Oil temp takes about 20 minutes or so of driving before reaching full operating temp, but that’s typical of most vehicles. If you’re seeing it take longer than a few miles of driving for coolant temp to come up to normal operating temp, you might have a stuck thermostat or something like others have suggested. Though, it could also just be variability in ambient temps etc.

 

It's literally the DME. I have the diagnostics from BMW on it. The cold start idle is off. There is a TSB on it, I just was looking to not spend $750 for a software update.

 

Your dealer was gonna charge you for a TSB update? That’s disappointing.

 

Yup. That's why I was hoping to see if if anyone has the files. Kinda bummed they want so much.

 

See if you can find an independent BMW/MINI shop that you feel you can trust. My last software update was done at one. Nowhere near $750.
