R55 Software/hardware for tuning
Software/hardware for tuning
I've had my '10 R55 for about 5 years. It's fbo with a bigger BorgWarner Airwerks turbo. The only "non bolt-on" is a ClutchMasters FX400 clutch/lightweight flywheel with a CravenSpeed short-throw shifter. I'm pushing 20lbs of boost and the car is stable. I have a stage 3 tune through Malone Tuning that my local Euro shop hooked me up with. I'm planning on installing a meth/water injection kit to help with the damn heat soak. I can easily install the kit myself. My issue is with tuning the car afterwards. If I go through GermanTech with a Malone Tune, I'm looking at $900+! I would love to do my own tuning but I cant for the life of me find the hardware to do it. I can find all kinds of offers for remote tunes but I don't want that. I wanna be able to do it myself and avoid having to pay almost $1000 every time I install an upgrade that requires a re-tune. Other platforms are easy to find tuning hardware for. Hondata... COBB... Apexi... Nothing for MINIs though. Where do Euro tuning shops get their hardware? Detroit Tuning has a decent set-up, but again... It's a remote tune through a 3rd party. God forbid I run into a situation where I have to revert back to my stock tune for a bit before having to pay yet again to get my car back to it's stage 3 tune. I don't understand why tuning hardware for MINIs is so damned hard to find. It's like I'm searching for alien technology. Technology that only a select few know of it's existence and are keeping it hidden from prying eyes. I knew absolutely nothing about MINIs when I bought my Clubman. All I knew was that literally nobody in my city of Louisville, KY drove one. Heck, hardly anybody drives MINIs in general in Louisville, let alone modded or tricked out ones... Especially the Clubman. In the 5 years I've owned my MINI, I've never seen another modded Clubman. As for Regular tricked out MINIs... I've seen 2. I wanted to be different and I definitely got my wish. On a good day my MINI can pull off consistent 4.4 0-60s. On a really good day I can pull off a 4.3 0-60... Maybe... I've only pulled it off once. Doing it again is probably a pipe dream. That is until I install my Meth/injection kit and my RPM Power intake manifold. I don't wanna do that though until I get a good handle on a sufficient and affordable method for tuning. I can not afford to pay $1000/tune.
Am I just being a pain in the *** cry baby? Is this just the way things are when you are building a MINI? I work a lot. I don't really do Social Media. Like I stated above. The MINI community is extremely small in Louisville. Almost non existent. I've been to a few cars and coffe and I'm always the only MINI. Everything else is usualy a Mustang, Charger, or 370Z with a few Supras, Vettes and Bimmers sprinkled in. My car usually gets laughed at. I love finding and embarrassing that one V8 to the point where they won't line up next to you at the next light. I'd like to keep it that way and maybe take it to the next level. That's what brought me here. Any help would would be greatly appreciated.

The car will not need retuning after water meth. You will control it all with the meth controller and the tune will automatically adjust to conditions based on sensor readings. I 100% feel the RPM tunes are the best out there and since you have an N14 you can use a powergate to flash to shock at any point if you wanted to go down that road, but you don't have to. but you might have to have a dealership flash it back to stock if your other tuner can not take it back to stock to get a stock file to load it onto the powergate since you are already tuned. give us a call if you have any questions. https://www.detroittuned.com/tuning/

It's a pretty big amount, but I've created my own fitness program, and if you're interested, I can show details and tell you more about how to do it right. For DIY tuning, one option worth exploring is ECU Master or OpenECU tools. While not as plug-and-play as COBB or Hondata, some tuners have successfully used them for Euro cars, including MINIs. You'll need to get comfortable with flashing software like WinOLS or TunerPro, but once you're set up, you can handle updates and revisions without relying on a third party.
