Im 45yrs old. 4 years ago I finally reached a point in my life where I could finally get serious with a build. I've owned several fun cars that I threw on the basics... Exhaust, intake, coilovers, but nothing beyond that. Right before the Pandemic hit I bought a car the car I've always wanted to get serious with... A '10 Clubman S. It's different, unique and you never see them (at least in Louisville, KY you don't). Heck, you barely see MINIs in general where I live. I bought my MINI for $3,000 with 80,000 miles on the speedo. Right away it needed a timing chain. After that I slowly began to make it my own. Right now it's full bolt on with a slightly bigger BorgWarner Airwerks turbo. The only "non bolt-on" parts on the car is a ClutchMasters FX-400 clutch, ClutchMasters lightweight flywheel, CravenSpeed short-throw shifter and JCW injectors. Some people claim a bigger turbo isn't a bolt-on. I disagree simply because aside from the carbon cleaning, I bolted it right on. With the help from my local Euro shop I went with a stage 3 Malone Tune. For some reason, Malone Tuning only offers a stage 2 if you go through their website. My local shop (GermanTech Motorsports) has a deal where you can get any stage you want through them. It's kind of expensive though, running me a little over $900, but it's worth it. The car pulls hard. My 0-60s average between 4.4 and 5.1 consistently (I'm positive that with the right conditions I could get lower). I am constantly hurting the feelings of other drivers. It's one helluva sleeper and the best car I have ever driven. Unfortunately it's the worst car I've ever owned. I've had more issues with this car than I ever imagined I would. I was warned about the R55 platform. I figured it was just like every other car though and that if I took care of it, performed regular maintenance and drove it responsibly, I wouldn't have any issues... WRONG! The thing seems to break every 2 months! It's never something easy either. It's always some random sensor or part located in a spot that only a mechanic can get to. I had to replace a set of door and sun roof seals once that cost me a few thousand dollars... And that didn't even fix the problem I was having. Electrical issues with this car are driving me insane. Mechanically the car is awesome, but electronically the car is a nightmare on wheels! Now the car is having cranking issues on startup and I'm getting a huge power loss above 2.5 and 3,000rpms. You can hear the turbo spool up louder than usual. It's as if the throttle body isn't working right. There is a loud swooshing of air from the turbo that sounds like its rebounding off of the throttle boddy. When you put your foot into it the car is a slug. If you stop the car, turn it off and pop the hood you can hear a humming sound coming from the throttle boddy area and under the intake. The only code the car is throwing is a p1338 camshaft sensor code. I've read this can be an extremely easy fix or really bad. Apparently the hpfp can cause this issue, but I replaced that when I upgraded the turbo. It probably doesn't have more than 10,000 miles on it. There's no way it can be the timing chain (I hope). While they are known for breaking, it's usually out of bad oil changing habits. I literally change my oil every 2,500miles or less. I overkill on oil changes. I've spent more money on weird electrical issues than I have on mods. I'm at the point right now where I've done all I can in terms of mods. The only thing left is internals. With all of these issues I've had though, I'm not sure if I shoud go any further. Tunes for this car are not cheap. I'd absolutely love to do my own tuning, but the hardware and software for tuning MINIs seems as if its a closely guarded secret between companies. There are several places that I can get tunes from. Theres a few places that will tune my car in person via a dyno, but they are nowhere near where I live. Where in the hell can I get the software and hardware needed to tune my car? I've got no problem learning how to do it. I absolutely know that it's an extremely delicate procedure and that one has to be very careful when making changes, but I have to learn if I don't wanna spend $1000 everytime I change or upgrade something important. My mechanic friend who works at GermanTech said he woukd gladly help me. While I do get my tunes from GermanTech. Malone does the actual tuning. All GermanTech does is use Malones hardware to upload a tune to my ECU, drive the car around and then tell Malone how the car is running. If it's not up to par, Malone will make changes and the process is repeated until the car is running at peak performance. I could get Malones box and do this myself, but I would only have access to a stage 2 tune. There's a reason why there is a "meta" when it comes to tuning platforms. The meta platforms are easy to tune, have lots of options for aftermarket support and farely inexpensive and easy to work on. MINIs are not part of the meta in the tuning community. They are the exact opposite of the meta... But I Iove them! However I'm always on the fence about selling my MINI and starting over with a more accessible platform. The car is driving me up the freaking wall. There's no telling what kind of issues I would have if I went any further andcstarted on internals. When it comes to internals the aftermarket options get even more limited. If you've made it this far in my post... Wow. Your definitely a committed MINI fan to read some random guys novel on why he has a love/hate relationship with his MINI. Does anyone else feel like this with their MINI. I know my build is extremely mild when compared to other builds. I don't get to see those types of MINIs where I live. Matter of fact, I've never seen a built MINI where I live. Of course I've only gone to a few car shows or get togethers since I've bought the car. I did go to one local show that was sporting about 300 cars. I saw all kinds of cars. A few Ferraris, an R32 Skyline, several Vipers... but no MINIs.
Did you scan the car and get any codes? You didn't mention it in your build, but one thing I did find made a huge difference once I got the tune and other exhaust mods was upgrading the intercooler.
Also, the sound you hear humming when you turn the car off might be the coolant line and pump. My N18 has a similar noise coming from where you see this arrow.
Hope you figure it out, sounds like an awesome car! Noise coming from coolant line?
