Key slot slide is stuck in the "in" position.

Just happened today on my 2009 Clubman JCW:

I tried to use my remote on the door but found that it did not work. I opened the door using the key in the fob. I found my other key in the remote start slot upside down. I must have left it in there overnight. Upon trying to remove it I found that it was stuck and it took some jiggling and pulling hard to get the key fob out. Problem now is that NOTHING works. There is no dash lights, no dome lights, nothing as if the car has no electricity at all.

Did i kill the battery with the upside down key in the slot overnight? Did I damage the key slot by pulling it out?

HELP!

RESOLVED: the battery happened to die at the same time so the key slot wouldn't release. Not sure if leaving the key in killed the battery but a new battery cleared everything up and back to normal.
