Non turbo oil

Hello,
New mini owner here but a fairly skilled home mechanic. Just bought a 2009 mini with 95k 6 speed. Good maintenance records. Struggling to get a feel what this car is capable of power wise. I've had 4 cylinders before, this one just seems like a dog. I added a cold air intake and K&N drop in. Someone told me they saw a puff of smoke from it, so I called a local shop and he recommended changing the oil from Castrol to Liquid moly which I did. I will say the engine actually sounds quieter however it seems like it has less torque and it feels like I need to rev higher between shifting ( @ 3k) , it's a manual, I know I control that but it just seems I was able to shift @ 2.5 k. Not sure how much the wrong oil can affect that but nothing else was changed. This oil was recommended by a mini shop that said they use it in all minis and is what recommended now.

I've always been a fan of mobile 1 and am considering switching just to see if it drives different.

Has anyone experienced with with an oil ?
What are you using?

Thanks,

Scott

I guess my question is what oils
