Hey all
I'm hoping someone can give me some advice or point me to the right thread. I have a 2016 Mini Cooper S F55 with about 30k miles. Tonight I was getting my engine oil changed and the person accidentally opened the transmission instead of the engine oil 🤦♀️ It appears they drained about 200 ml before realizing it looked off and closing it up/calling me over.
Does anyone have a step by step on how to change the transmission fluid in this car? And is it safe to drive/shift with that much missing?
I used a write up from this website to do my 2012 so I have the pump and attachment for that one, but when I first got this car I thought I had read that the 2016 was sealed and way more of a PITA to do? I'm hoping this is not true and I'm not super screwed or else I'll have to call mini and let them have at it lol.
If anyone has updated info on how to change this one, what type of oil it requires, and preferably diagrams 🙏 I will be forever grateful! TIA!
If they only removed the "overflow" part of the plug, you're still fine.
See below
You will need ATF 6, runs $30 to $50 a quart.
Here's from the service manual
Release oil filler plug (1) from engine compartment.
Loosen the overflow plug (2) below at the transmission.
Top up automatic transmission oil at oil filler plug (1) until oil emerges from overflow plug (2) at bottom.
Start engine and run at idle speed.
Check whether automatic transmission oil emerges at overflow plug.
If not, fill automatic transmission fluid.
Actuate footbrake and at idle shift through all gears ("P" to "D") twice for more than 2 seconds.
Then set switch to "P".
Check again whether oil emerges at overflow plug (2) at bottom.
Check the temperature of the automatic transmission fluid with the diagnosis system.
Increase temperature of automatic transmission fluid to 35 ... 45 °C.
Top up automatic transmission fluid until it flows over.
Screw in oil filler plug (1) and overflow plug (2).
Thank you soooo much for this!
Yes, automatic. They only opened what I think is the overflow part on the bottom, it's that exact bolt seen in picture 2. However, the car was not hot and about 200 ml still came out? Is this fine? Maybe due to being ramped in the front?
Given that oil is already coming out from the overflow (assuming this is the overflow) does that mean I would not need to add more?
