R50/53 Pulley upgrades
Pulley upgrades
I've had my 05 R52S for about 3 1/2 years now, and have been considering a pulley upgrade just about the whole time, not because of known abuse or mileage (only 65K), but because of time mostly. I had bought the colder plugs and the new belt about 1 year ago when I found them for a too good to pass up price. So... this week I finally pulled the trigger and ordered a new ATI crank pulley, 15% SC pulley, tensioner and idler from Way Motor Works. I made up a couple of different studs to use to pull the crank pulley and nabbed a pair of chain vise grips from work, (don't tell anyone!), bought some 70mm and 100mm bolts also.
I have to say the worst part of the job is just the up and down of the engine... soooo not too bad at all. I made sure and tapped out the 3 holes in the crank pulley and got to work. EVERYTHING came out super easy, just paid a little attention to the progress as I was pulling the pulleys with the impact wrench. It took a little bit of time, maybe about 4 hours, including changing the plugs and an oil change. I am just never in a hurry with any work on the cars.
Anyway, I was worried about the crank pulley going bad, as we are taking a trip soon, and didn't want to be sitting in the middle of nowhere in limp mode. The crank pulley showed no signs of coming apart, but the idler was toast, it had about 1/8" of play in it, and it looks like someone had already changed out the tensioner as it was a Litens brand.
Took the car out for a little spin, and am really happy that I finally changed the SC pulley! The car pulls soooo much nicer now, just like most of you already know, and it seems to run a little smoother with the ATI.
So, it's time to sacrifice a little bit of fuel economy for a while and have some fun!
Thanks to WMW for the great parts, and AWESOME shipping!!

If you are concerned about the ATI damper coming apart...don't.
The way that it's made, it can't "come apart". The o-rings inside however can wear out over time. But gain the way that the damper is designed and made, it will outlast the car/engine. It's made to turn MANY more RPM and at a MUCH higher torsional twisting than the little Mini engine will ever put out.
In friends cars, I've seen this things live in 600hp V-8 powered cars that were street driven, on and off for years. And on 1500hp race engines for years without rebuild.
Again...not to worry.
