Got my wife a classic mini. ( I restore cars as a hobby, just new to minis) Found a great car in the rare Zircon blue, no rust, nice car to find. So far everything seems good, I have been slowly fixing up engine with small improvements new carb HS4, new oil, stronger magnet plug, etc. Mainly just maintenance stuff that needs attention. Got the new carb because the car just seemed to lag and struggle going from 3rd to 4th and it was a bit wore out and I wanted back up anyway. So with new carb the car does idle and run a lot better. Plugs look better as well. Just getting the weird power band feeling.
My main question is what are the rev limits on these cars.I'm just not familiar with these engines and how much is too much in terms of rpm's? Mainly because, when we shift from 3rd to 4th (around 3200-3500 rpm) as soon as I'm in 4th rpm's drop too 2800 ish and it feels like It's geared to high and and starts to lag like I'm in too high of a gear and I have to speed up like it needs to be going faster for 4th. I feel like after 4000 rpm's is the danger zone, but am I wrong, do these engine like to be maxed out before every shift? Don't want to be hard on it...? So we end up driving a little faster to say in a better power band...
I typically shift in the 3500-4000 range too, but cruising on the highway I try to keep it at 4000 which is about 60mph with a 3.44 fianl drive. When I want nail it from a stop or low speed I'm hitting 5000rpm or maybe a bit higher. Mine's a 1275- 998's like to rev, so if that's what you have you may want to see how the power feels. I also have a close ratio gearbox, so its easier to stay in the powerband while upshifting.
Ok, Kinda where I was think rpm wise. Yeah, her car is a (pretty much stock) 998. Don't feel very comfortable taking that sucker on the highway, around here (DFW area). It's like Thunder Dome at 80 mph, around here on the tollways... Guess that engine just doesn't like to be in the low 25-3000 unless it's first and going up. It's mainly a concern for the 45 mph roads near me. 3rd feels like it's too much, then when you hit 4th your going too slow and you want to drive faster to stop the engine lag. Then your over 45 real quick.... It's the speed limit paradox!
