Hello all,
I hit a huge bump on the freeway and blew out my P-Zero run flat tires. I was able to limp to Big O but they didnt have a single 19" tire. I called costco, firestone, americas tires and so on and no one had a single 19" tire in stock (I was willing to take any brand that would work, just wanted to get home). With that being said, this was a good opportunity to get rid of the run flats and I have 4 Michelin pilot sport 4s's on order (had to get my car towed home on flat bed). I'm considering letting my son and daughter use this car for college/barrow when needed. I want to make sure they have a back up spare so they don't get stranded in an emergency situation. I have seen the spare tires being sold at the various aftermarket sellers but the spare does not work for the R60 JCW Countryman All4, something about the larger brakes getting in the way? I saw the thread about the MB spare that was MacGyvered to work but it doesn't seem like a great option and very difficult to get. Has anyone with an R60 JCW Countryman All4 have any success with a spare tire?
Wow, that must have been one helluva bump. That said, the only two flat tires I've ever had in 42 years of driving were in 4 years of owning a BMW with run flats.
I have Michelin Pilot Sport 4s for summer on my car and they are great. You may have run across this before -- quite a few of us keep a bottle of slime and a portable compressor in the boot. Haven't had to use it so far.
You could get a cheap rim and put one of the used run flats on it. It will take up a lot of space though. I want to get a roof rack basket to have a spare. Someone should make a roof rack spare tire kit in an enclosed case.
I think slime + air compressor is my best option so far while keeping my eyes out for a non full size spare that will work. On a side note, I limped to Americas Tires today on the same blown out tire (only about 1 mile away). Fresh Michelin pilot sport 4s's are on and the difference is night and day. The P zero run flats that were on before were my first run flats ever and I was itching to have a good excuse to replace them. Maybe the run flats saved my rims from getting bent because as soon as I hit the bump I was sure some rim damage had to have happen. Run flats aren't terrible but for sure are louder, heavier, track terribly and can't perform like a true performance tire.
There are some previous conversations for a setup that involves a Mercedes space saver (fits on the rear floor) and an adapter, would also require a jack, wrench and pump of course. The advantage is doesn’t take up space with full size tire in the cabin.
Space saver I think from Mercedes C230 or CLK230.
