Got this problem with my 2012 Mini one (R56). When I switch my daytime driving lights on (on the stick) my side lights or headlight low dip beam lights or whatever it is comes on as well. I see other Mini's that don't, just the little lights on under the front bumper. How do I turn them off? I've been into the settings program on the stick and I can't turn them off without turning off the daytime driving lights altogether. Anybody help?
Some clarity, Michael!
I don't have an R56, but - You shouldn't need to operate or switch anything on for the Daylight Running Lights to come on, they come on automatically with the ignition. They are in the headlights but at a dimmer setting. No rear lights come on.
When you operate the lighting stalk, first click you get parking/sidelights front & rear; the DRLs stay on if the ignition is on.
Second click, you get headlights at full brightness - if you push the stalk backward & forward you get high or low beams. Turn them on when it gets dark.
You may have fog lights on a separate switch - they are very low down (for use in fog) & very bright. They should only work if the sidelights or low beam headlights are on.
Other MINIs have different arrangements. Some of these combinations can be changed by dealer programming or by yourself. For your safety & others, it's important that you find out how your car is configured.
Other R56 owners are most welcome to comment!
Thank you for taking the time to help but I don't think you quite understand.
My Daytime Running Lights work perfectly. Providing the headlight stick on the side of the steering wheel is turned back to the first click the DRL will come on and off as you turn your ignition off and on. The trouble I'm having is when they are on, the side lights in the headlights also come on, so that means there are four lights showing at the front, DRL under the front bumper and the side lights in the headlights also. I've seen other Minis go past in the opposite direction and they don't have all four illuminated, just the DRL under the front bumper. I've been into the change/set menu on the stick and I can't find a setting to turn them off and just leave the small DRL on. The only setting I found in there turned the DRL's off/on. I hope that's clear to you.
A little clearer, thank you, Michael.
Then my suspicion is that something has been changed. Your photo, which helps, gives the impression of halogen headlights & LED DRLs which could be aftermarket units. Only part of the lower lights seem to be lit; Could they be combined DRL & fog light units?
Hello Mike,
Right, firstly I have put halogen bulbs in the small lower lights.
But, the thing I've just found out is that I've been under a misapprehension, I've always thought that the DRL's were the small lower set of lights, where in reality they are not. The DRL's are built into the headlight! I'm right aren't I?
So the only way to have the small lower lights on during the day is to switch the side lights on every time I start the car.
I suppose it's another Mini quirk.
Michael.
Yes, I believe the factory DRLs are in the headlights.
I've always thought that the lowest light positions on all MINIs are for fog lights, often an option. Under UK rules I don't think they are technically legal for anything else - or at least they used not to be.
Having said that, I see a lot of aftermarket units advertized as fog/DRLs - just Google >> R56 fog lights << & I imagine you have something similar.
