No crank, no start! Hayes shows 2007 ignition different from all other years.

Need help! To start I was having issues due to bad battery. Got a new battery and car won’t crank everything turns on works. I can even hear the relay in footwell clicking when I try to start.
now what happened- my friend was trying to do a compression test on the motor the last time the starter worked before realizing all problems were bad battery. But when I hit the starter for compression test there was a large spark from under hood.
the Hayes manual shows 2007 models having a different setup for ignition than the 2006 and also 2008. So idk what to go by because I have a start stop button my car is a 2007 and I have 2 fuses that say start stop in footwell and I believe a relay. Which would be right for the Hayes manual but only if I didn’t have a button and had a key? Please help so I know where to start! I can’t find anywhere no crank

I didn't know there were R56 with regular key ignition switch, but apparently that is so. Graphics in realoem show a regular key insert switch instead of a button switch (though I haven't been able to find out in which cases).

Maybe if you enter your car's VIN into realoem.com and browse through the relevant parts lists there you can identify what exactly has been fitted in your car. Make sure to observe variations according to your car's specific configuration (i.e. as specified under "For vehicles with..." in the description column).

2007 S manual
You may be getting confused because the 2007 was the first year of the "second generation" hardtop Cooper S. However the convertible Cooper S models stayed in the "first generation" until 2009. First generation cars have the traditional key type ignition where you put the key in the ignition barrel. Second generation cars have a slot for the whole key fob and a push to start button.

I've never had to troubleshoot the ignition system so I don't have any help beyond that, but hopefully that helps clear up some things.

Sounds like to me that a stray wire or tool was left hanging somewhere and caught either the coil pack plugs or the terminals on the starter motor.

@ thebombardier:

BMW made the effort to draw a regular key ignition in the parts drawings, so I suppose there are at least some cars out there which were not equipped with the common ignition button (item 21):

Looks more like some sort of dummy plug to me, especially since this diagram is showing trim for the dashboard and nothing in the actual electrical system.

This is the only part RealOEM shows for a Start/Stop switch: https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=61_2106

It looks like it has a slot for a mechanical key. And if it is a dummy: Why have one at all and how would cars with such a dummy get started?

Maybe Cault77 can shed some light into this by clarifying what the Hayes manual states exactly (and for which model/cars it is actually applicable).

If you saw a large spark, that had to come from somewhere. Check your fuses for the starter.
