Water Pump or Thermostat?

I have a 2006 R53 with about 72k miles on it. Last Fall it developed a coolant leak and I noticed at times with the heat on the heating system air would go cool. I first assumed it was the water pump and we tried to get a view of the water pump to see if that is where the coolant was coming from. The puddle was on the drivers side toward the rear of the engine compartment. After mulling and researching over the Winter I am wondering if it is the thermostat which I think would be a much easier project but I was planning on doing some other things as normal maintenance. Can someone provide an opinion from the evidence given.
My next question involves the supercharger. Since I bought the car in 2016 with about 54k miles on it during rapid acceleration a smell was produced. Is this normal or maybe the supercharger has been low on oil? It sure seems to work all right.
So any opinions on either issue would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!!
